About this deal

The first and foremost being the perpetual subplot with Oll and John, it was always terrible but it reaches new depths of pointlessness in this novel with Oll essentially declaring his plan was just to have a chat with the Emperor yeah like that was going to achieve anything at this point Horus is about to obliterate Earth and you think you can fix it by having a chat with the Emperor. There will be other books, from the Black Library and from Dan – this is only part one after all – and there will be other series. He re-strategises on how humanity can conquer the universe and free themselves from warp travel/the taint of Chaos.

It takes a bit of time to get used to, but its a great way of telling the reader which protagonist is currently centre stage. The first half of the book is genuinely amazing, a mood piece, seeing 60+ books of main characters all reduced to essentially Dark souls NPC's in a world that has well and truly fallen apart.

The endgame to the Horus Heresy is in the best hands possible and I have no doubt that Abnett will absolutely deliver a heart-breaking and awe-inspiring finale, one that has been nearly two decades in the making since the release of the first book. In the final days or hours of life, many people have a brief surge of energy and seem like they're doing better. Everything you’d expect from Gothic literature is here; lingering sensual description, inexplicable death, melancholy and sickness, realism and horror, the past intruding on the present, fake-historical documents interleaved with prose sections, weather, comparisons of XY and Z to falling leaves, moral, physical, and architectural ruin, deep introspection, a preoccupation with pathetic fallacy that works because the warp really does infect everything with a creeping anthropomorphism, and more hypallage than the groaning page can contain.

By completing your purchase, you agree to Audible's Conditions of Use and authorise Audible to charge your designated card or any other card on file. Elements of the story that are 30 years old, or came out of the Collected Visions and the rest of the Heresy are brought to life, fleshed out – given context and shape and sense that they’ve always lacked. Yet the hope is slim, for the Warmaster sees all and knows all, and the ultimate victory of Chaos is at hand.Dan does a amazing job of bringing together a vast cast of characters from across the series and giving them all their due.
