you will enjoy it immensely: the totally absurd story, the British prototypes, the brilliantly rich and round use of the English language. But Ted’s crackling observations — the fuel that drives the movie — have the fluency and rapier wit of a diligent, erudite mind. The terrible news is that this is not funny at all, not even wrily in and English with a gin and tonic bone-dry drollness funny: in fact, it's witless and boring.

Almost every reader will see some of their own foibles in him at some point in the text, which can make for some uncomfortable reading moments. He attended Queen’s College Cambridge from 1979, joining the Cambridge Footlights Dramatic Club where he met Hugh Laurie, with whom he forged a highly successful writing partnership. It is difficult to tell with Adrian which of his stories are true and which not, but seeing how he changes through the years is apparent in either case. At the manor, owned by his former friend Michael, Lord Logan, Ted becomes acquainted with his sixteen-year-old godson, David, who displays an unusual fascination with sex and nature. Given Fry’s fame in Britain as a comic actor, the serious thought that underlies his novelistic output is often overlooked. As it is, this book now seemed to be an odd mix of two separate books: an addition to Fry's school years autobiography, and a camp espionage caper. Make yourself a cup of tea, get some nibbles and settle down to watch a well written and well acted fim. Adrian is an inveterate liar, which probably sounds bad but isn't, as the lies he comes up with are so outrageous they're actually quite hilarious. I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish and thought it well-found the balance between absurdity, pathos and grit.

The narration was pure Fry wit, and the gently-paced plot full of his humour, at times subtle, at times grotesque, and sufficient to keep me guessing how it would all work out in the end. The plot is quite unorthodox and may seem quite messy at times, the characters are all likable, and the humor is intelligent and very infectious. As for laughs - it passed the the fling-up-the-head-snort-and-slap-the-thigh test a dozen times in the first few pages alone. Stephen Fry's breathtakingly outrageous debut novel, by turns eccentric, shocking, brilliantly comic and achingly romantic. The film is structured in the manner of the old Poirot films, with less focus on the mystery, and more on the interaction between the characters, and more importantly, class conflict, of which the film . While Michael and company despair over the possibility of having to euthanise Lilac, Ted learns from various members of his god-family that the miracles he was sent to investigate were performed by David. The movie shows the relationship between Ted, his godson, and the people who reside in the mansion, some of who lost favor with Ted years ago, with good reason.

THE HIPPOPOTAMUS by Stephen Fry Book Review – THE HIPPOPOTAMUS by Stephen Fry

Into the mix, which includes David’s good-natured older brother, Simon (Dean Ridge) — who has none of his sibling’s pretensions — guests arrive, as they inevitably do at an English manor. a) A fatuous, wasted, degenerate and wholly useless existence captured in delicate, lyrical and exquisitely realised prose.

This novel is so many things at once - a British public school pastiche, a coming-of-age novel, an espionage thriller, a saddening commentary on life, yet at once a manifesto for everyone who's ever felt out of the ordinary, a heart-breakingly true account of the madness of being young and in love, and so on. The film adds a voice over to give the audience the musings and assorted drunken drivel from the author protagonist, who is a crumpled forgettable middle-aged man of no discernible attributes. Even though the filmmakers have significantly reduced the book’s dramatis personae, the relationships take their time coming into focus, and some never quite do. At the suggestion of a sick god-daughter, Jane (suffering from leukaemia), he goes to stay at the Norfolk country house of old schoolfriend and Army colleague from National Service, Lord Michael Logan and his wife Lady Anne, to investigate unspecified mysterious goings-on.

No one loves and quarrels, desires and deceives as boldly and brilliantly as Greek gods and goddesses. This is not a complaint by the way, but there were moments where I knew I did not understand something, but these differences were not enough for me to lose major plot points. This is an engrossing and compelling blend of political thriller and pitch-perfect historical novel. With a poet's passion for the truth, Ted hurries to debunk the miracles and save a young man from a lifetime of embarrassment.Fired from his newspaper, months behind on his alimony payments and disgusted with a world that undervalues him, Ted seeks a few months repose and free drink at Swafford Hall, the country mansion of his old friend Lord Logan. There are more mobile phones in the world than there are people on the planet: Stephen Fry talks to the backroom boys who made it all possible and hears how the technology succeeded, in ways that the geeks had not necessarily intended. The good news is that the 'Mystery at the Mansion' is such an easy type to make and sell that the industry can hardly turnout a bad one these days. There's something about his terribly English combination of wit, erudition and a dirty mind that never fails to delight me, and it shines brightly in The Liar, the first of the four novels he has published so far.
