About this deal

So when strange things happen after his family's move to a relative's dilapidated estate, sister Mallory (Sarah Bolger), twin brother Simon and their mother assume that Jared is behind it all. That evening, Jared shows the content of the book to Simon and discuss whether or not they have a Boggart — a troublesome creature that was once a helpful Brownie — in the house. I'm happy to report that The Spiderwick Chronicles sidesteps this pitfall and offers a surprisingly enjoyable adventure for the younger gamer. Noseeum Jack apologizes to Nick for not helping them and tells him he kept something for them in his backyard, which Nick doesn't even bother to investigate. Arthur Spiderwick discovered this hidden dimension many years ago and kept a journal of his discoveries.

They seem to be able to do some magic as well, as they owned a cap able to make humans breathe underwater (similarly to the caps worn by merfolk in fairy tales to walk on the shore). I won't so much say that this film is underdeveloped, as much as I would say that it's, if you will, unevenly developed, brushing over, if not abandoning elements of background information, only to attempt compensation by forcing exposition into the dialogue, which isn't to say that all that much development is needed, seeing as how most everything in this film is familiar. The giants follow it out to sea and the kids go back to the hotel where they find the Grace kids waiting for them with the news that the giants woke up all at the same time because they were there to kill something even worse. At the end, the Vargas kids keep their promise and deliver her and her two surviving sisters to a nearby pond.A giant then attacks them, being saved by the showing up of Jack Junior, who suddenly decided to listen to his father and come help the children kill the giants (being surprised when they reveal him that killing giants is no longer their plan). They catch the little faerie, whom Laurie names Sandspur and assumes to be a hobgoblin, based on the Field Guide.

The three nixies eventually agree to use their singing to lure the giants, and one of them is taken to the water with Nick and Jared in a surfboard (since nixies are used to freshwater, salt water hurts their skin). Based on the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, Nick thinks about the possibility of asking the merfolk to lure the giants to the sea, since they seem to be hypnotized by a nixie's singing.

There's a sense of ambition to director Mark Waters' storytelling that is thoroughly charming, but it also stresses limitations, as well as consequential shortcomings, such as the sloppy expository handlings and too much of a sense of conventionalism, which further reflect natural shortcomings until the final product fizzles out as just another family fantasy flick. The small dumbwaiter took him up to a secret library, where there are loads of books about strange subjects and a small note left on the working desk. When Jared is about to get his things from the car into the kitchen, he hears something moving inside the wall. Once there, they are disappointed when Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black don't believe them, but they then run into Jared and Simon Grace, who offer to help them gather useful information. Like spriggans and hydras, these faeries are not mentioned in the Field Guide, probably not being known by Arthur Spiderwick.
