One general difference is that in “The Destructors” the setting is in Great Britain, after the bombing had happened during World War 1, when the buildings were destroyed. The chapters move unexpectedly and briskly; some are only a sentence in length while others are several pages. With the code he gets from Freeman, he sets up an identity as an Army major, with Kate as his prisoner. The overall structure of this book is very confusing, I struggled to recognise a story at all in places, and there is very little characterisation, so it is a tough read. Escaping into the world as a young adult, he uses near autistic savant capabilities to re-program the network to assume a new identity each time he is discovered by the government.

I keep re-reading it, not to compare it against current tech, but because I always feel that I may be old enough to like it this time.

Regardless of taxonomy, it remains a prescient look at the power of information control and the fragmentation of society and identity. We see him in real time through the eyes of the interrogators, and in his past in very close-up third person. I have read at least a few dozen of Brunner's novels but this one, like Stand on Zanzibar really stands out.Dobbs states that war is one of the worst actions a country can engage in, and therefore a nation must be careful about entering war.
