About this deal

So the story begins with the murder of a highly respected police officer who was attending a courtroom in the Old Bailey and the repercussions from that send shock waves throughout the both the police and public. The book takes you through the life of a baby barrister, and all the hard work, long nights and sometimes personal feelings, that goes into fighting for tenancy during pupillage. In 2014, while still a practising barrister, he began starring in his reality court show Judge Rinder, and he now uses his legal knowledge working in the media to make the law more accessible. With a wonderful “love to hate” central character – Hannah is a prickly, judgmental alcoholic with poor impulse control – this is an original and thoroughly enjoyable treat.

I was really looking forward to reading this book I have always liked Rob Rinder in his various tv appearances and was curious to know if his talent would shine through in his writing and oh boy did it just, I loved the book ! Young, enthusiastic, determined and dedicated to the truth and justice, we follow Adam's journey through the courtcase and what Adam has to endure as someone who doesn't quite fit it.The novel's main plotline is the murder trial, but of course, no one is lucky enough to only have one case to work on at a time! I would, however, have loved more of Adam's mother, whose character has echoes of Maureen Lipman - "You get an 'ology', you're a scientisr! An inspiring and informative interactive guide written for children of all ages, to get them thinking about what sports they enjoy the most or could be interested in. Shortly after the programme started, he criticised Judith Sheindlin, the judge of Judge Judy, for making judgements based on her preconceptions while claiming that he applied the law seriously and made "real legal rulings". With a police force full of corruption and a very lazy barrister it seems it is all down to one trainee to save the day.

They are both Jewish, with single mothers, from working-class backgrounds, navigating an Oxbridge-dominated profession. In August 2023, it was announced that Rinder will co-present with Philippa Langley - The Lost Princes (w/t), an upcoming Channel 4 history documentary. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel following Adam Green's first case: a tricky one in which he is to second his pompous disinterested pupil master in the defence of an ex-con accused of the murder of a seemingly exemplary police officer. As the narrative progresses, it becomes evident that the “pride of the nation” might not have been the honest, hardworking member of law enforcement he was made out to be.I felt that if the book had at around the 150 page mark by the time it got to the end, the story would have been set and it could easily have been expanded upon. As well as balancing home life with networking events, trials after trials and everything in between, the grittiness and honesty are clearly shown through the eyes of an author who has been through it all before himself. After all the skulking about in dingy magistrates' courts, his pupil master gets two big briefs; a high-scale fraud, and an infamous murder! For a first book this was good and was good enough that I didn't hear the authors voice running over all the characters.

Framed as a police procedural, but with the breadth of a saga, this ambitious novel begins with the murder of an eight-year-old girl in a village a few hours from Delhi. Most students are stylish and socially adept, and have little to say about the missing girl, who had only one real friend.I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by this one, especially as ‘celeb’ books can be very divisive. He went on to specialise in cases involving international fraud, money laundering and other forms of financial crime.
