About this deal

I think probably he could have tackled at least some of these questions with more time between Joan's death and publication of this memoir. You just have one sound that you need to be aware of—when you say ‘basin’ or ‘council’ or ‘pencil,’ you overcompensate and say ‘bay-SIN,’ ‘coun-CIL,’ and ‘pen-CIL.

Was able to read this for work, was shocked to have to wipe away tears reading at my desk, so moving and amazingly written. I thought about that encounter a lot as I read A Pocketful of Happiness, because the book clarified it for me. Unbearably sad, beautifully written, and something of a guide for anyone supporting someone who is terminally ill. In the run-up to the ceremony, Grant posted regular videos of his gleeful adventures on the Oscars circuit, including his eagerness to meet Streisand, who lives in Los Angeles. One minute, I was feasting on what amounted to high-class gossip; the next, I was being told the most intimate things about a woman I understood to have been fiercely private. And, for the record, if I am ever lucky enough to be nominated for an Oscar - I want to experience it with the pure joy and delight that Grant had during his awards season for 'Can You Ever Forgive Me?

He also learns about Lee’s time here in the days leading up to the Civil War, and discovers the enduring importance of his account of the town’s fortunes. In Pocketful, he names and shames – oh dear – the Guardian for running a news piece shortly before the event with the headline: “Richard E Grant’s Oscar glee: ingenue or a crafty campaigner? He was recovering from tuberculosis and was also heartbroken following the end of an affair with Fanny Osbourne, a married American woman. His decision to form the book’s narrative jointly out of the most enchanting highs (the Oscars, karaoke with Olivia Colman in a house formerly owned by Bette Davis) and the bleakest lows (Joan’s diagnosis, her fury when Grant inadvertently used the word terminal one day to describe her illness) came, he said, out of his desire to accurately capture what most people’s lives are like… [Richard and Joan’s] relationship is the fascinating central pillar of the book. That was a unique experience for me, because normally you’re interacting with other people all the time. I understand I can change my preference through my account settings or unsubscribe directly from any marketing communications at any time. Sometimes, it took the form of practical help: on Sundays, Nigella Lawson would send supper over in a taxi. Grant is an actor who found fame in "Withnail and I" and recently won best-supporting actor awards for "Can You Ever Forgive Me?

On the red carpet, Ali Plumb and Vick Hope are masters at capturing the excitement and anticipation in the build-up to the ceremony. Joan voice coached so many people from Kate Blanchett to Dame Julie Waters and so many many others there were literally thousands. As soon as I saw any of the other actors, I always had hundreds of questions for them, I was asking, ‘What’s going on? More recently, I saw him portray the character of Bob Crachit in Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" starring Patrick Stewart as Scrooge.Inspired by the writing of poet and playwright Federico Garcia Lorca, one of Spain’s most celebrated figures, he finds out about the city’s rich Moorish heritage, its rich Romani culture and the tragic part it played in the Spanish Civil War. Having had good friends go through a large part of this in the last twelve months, I needed to listen to perhaps try and answer some of the questions that I couldn’t yet ask of them. Bought a bunch of tulips, wondering if this might be inappropriate/patronising/non-her and held them behind my back when I rang the doorbell, keeping them hidden until I was inside. What a beautiful relationship they had, and how honestly he conveys the pain following her diagnosis.
