The big new Centaur Vampire Lauka Vai, Mother of Nightmares and the none named version in the Vengorian Lord are a really nice mix of power and thematic rules which can sometimes counteract with the more reliable choices in the book. The Artefacts are a bit dicier, filled with “once per battle” options which will require smart usage. If a spell is successfully cast, your opponent can pick 1 of their WIZARDS that is within 30" of the caster to attempt to unbind the spell before its effects are applied.

Looking at the new models, Lauka Vai is simply spectacular – hideous, and disturbing, and yet full of alluring, debonair charm that only vampires can exude, she’s about as sexy a creature as you’re likely to find, that’s essentially a human torso protruding from a ghoulish, distended bat-body. Foremost among them are the Vyrkos, Kastelai, and Avengorii clans, each with a distinct bloodline curse and magical proclivity.While Neferata sees control as a means of inflating her own worldly power, Mannfred is more interested in earning the favour of Nagash to elevate his lot. While the names and the general idea of what a spell does is the same, many of their effects were rewritten to include different rolls or changed casting values.

She’s said to be able to command Dire Wolves directly and even curse living mortals to become wolves with a gesture of her wizened hand.

Given the books reliance on large groups of Skeleton Warriors and Zombies this could be useful to prevent huge losses from battleshock. It all works together remarkably well and big scary units can get blunted if they aren’t careful who they target first, or done some work before combat to peel back a few of the layers of defence. Upon the detonation of the Necroquake, Radukar and his followers gained immense necromantic magic and became power-hungry, loosing all restraint and turned against the nobility of Mournhold, feasting on any of his enemies who might defy him and turning a few survivors who would join him. Part of me wants to try multiples of them and see if I can screen them long enough for their Mortal Wounds to do their thing but I feel that might be a fools errand. But it’s not going to be a push over at all and firmly sits in the playable bracket at any serious event, capable of winning, but you’ll need skill and more than a little luck.

All of the shrug saves on heroes have proven really useful against the Lumineth forest I’ve been running through lately, it takes concerted effort to shoot units I need off the table. Previously Vampires were just another unit in the book (although Nefereta and Mannfred were Mortarchs in their own right) and not really the star of the show.
