About this deal

Presenting the story of climate change – the science, the consequences and most importantly our options for responding to it – in a way that doesn’t ruffle the feathers of the notoriously sceptical right-leaning UK press is certainly a major step in the right direction. The 48-page hardback, in the style of the iconic children’s Ladybird series popular in the 1960s and 70s, is co-authored by the former executive director of Friends of the Earth, Tony Juniper, and Cambridge-based polar scientist, Emily Shuckburgh. Prince Charles’s book is part of a new series of the hit guide books by experts on a range of subjects.

She is a mathematician and climate scientist and a Fellow of Darwin College, a Fellow of the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, an Associate Fellow of the Centre for Science and Policy, a Fellow of the British Antarctic Survey and a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society. Co-author Emily Shuckburgh said: "I don't think there has ever been a Ladybird book before in the history of ladybird books to have been subject to multiple rounds of peer review, but now we have one, and given the nature of the topic area it was incredibly important to us that we could assure that robustness of the scientific evidence. Professor Emily Shuckburgh, a climate scientist for decades and director of the University's Cambridge Zero climate change initiative said the book was written for today's children who have only known a planet ravaged by climate change. Asked how the book might be received in the academic community, Dr Phillip Williamson, an associate fellow at the University of East Anglia's School of Environmental Sciences, said: "There's the obvious danger that this won't be taken seriously. Each beautifully illustrated book features the first new illustrations produced in the original Ladybird style for nearly forty years.

Charles has co-authored A Ladybird Book: Climate Change, which is a child-friendly title adapted from the Ladybird Expert volume published in 2017. Climate Change looks at the causes and effects of climate change on human life, nature and the Earth's geography. The cover of Prince Charles’ book was inspired by the flooding of the Sussex town of Uckfield in 2000, which led him to criticise humanity’s “arrogant disregard of the delicate balance of nature”. And evolution, too, is another priority, particularly as a Gallup poll in 2012 showed that 46 per cent of Americans are creationists who believe that the Bible is a book of history and that evolution is a myth. And if there is one thing he’s learnt from presenting Radio 4’s The Life Scientific and TV documentaries, it’s ‘people want to be made to feel clever’.

Quantum mechanics is so weird, and people love weird, whether it’s Harry Potter, or science fiction or magic tricks,’ he continues, ‘and quantum theory is just so perplexing and people like that. When the team were thinking about new titles and what topics children might be interested in, climate change and the importance of protecting our world was something we really wanted to explore," Walden said. Da ist in wenigen Worten und einigen hingeworfenen Beispielen so viel Inhalt verwurstet, dass jemand ohne solide Hintergrundinfos vieles nicht wirklich verstehen wird.It would be about inbreeding and the differences between males and females – I touch on it a bit in the evolution book – but the publishers said no. Ever since I was a young teenager I have been deeply worried about the way we have shaped our world. Their efforts have emphasised the importance of caring about what life will be like in the future – there is a lesson in this for us all. Perhaps he might even read it, as it’s not too long, and proceed to make an intelligent contribution to the problems of the world.
