Depending on the shade you choose and the natural wood colour, you may need to apply up to three coats of paint to get a streak-free, opaque finish. Note that oil-based exterior primers and paints are best for unpainted wooden surfaces, while latex exterior primers and paints are better for painted surfaces.

Although from a distance the finish may look good, up-close this isn’t the case as you are often left with many roller marks in the paint. An alternative choice to a 1/4 Nap roller such the Red Feather would be to use a foam roller, which has no nap at all.

Both types of product usually contain anti-mould elements and an ingredient that will help waterproof your fence panels, to stop any moisture from getting in and rotting the timber. Slow and gentle motions will apply to paint evenly, and if your roller has a good pick-up, it will not require much pressure to apply to paint. For example, you can use a brush to cover the small, tricky areas first, then a roller for the larger sections, or vice versa. The longer pile mohair sleeves are excellent for covering textured finishes such as orange peel, sand swirl, bare bricks and blocks and artex ceilings as the longer pile gets down into nooks and crannies in a much more consistent way. This is ideal for most surfaces when used with different length naps, and can even be used with varnish.

As the roller isn’t going to be making 100% contact with the surface (which is especially true with feather edge fencing), there’ll be plenty of spots where paint simply doesn’t get applied. Suitable for use with water-based emulsion paint, the micorfibre pile picks up and holds a decent amount of paint without sucking up too much which in turn gives you a very even coating. This ensures that the same roller is used on the full wall, achieving the most even finish possible.
