In this loosely autobiographical novel, Strasser introduces 18-year-old Lucas, who is bright and sensitive but also a screw up…. Jekyll offers Richard a bright green beverage which, when knocked out of his hand, dissolves through the wooden floorboards in a matter of seconds. We understand that not everyone can donate right now, but if you can afford to contribute, we promise it will be put to good use. An old-fashioned adventure where a timid boy finds the courage to cross obstacles, with the help of three books come to life, it now seems that it was tailor-made for the younger me.

Whilst Horror had quite a few spooky scenes and built up atmosphere going for it in this movie, Adventure seems like it comes and goes, although it has its few quiet moments like Richard Tyler telling Adventure that he and the other books are the only friends he’s ever had. I found it at a neighbor's garage sale and I freaked out, bought it, and then ran home to the couch.

Richard asks for directions to the exit so the Pagemaster sends him through the fiction section toward the green neon exit sign.

This was one of the first films to feature live-action, traditional animation, and CGI animation all together. I used to LOVE watching this film when I was a kid, from the start and even during the end credits - it was all amazing for me! The easy access of Horror, Adventure, and Fantasy is explored, all through a wonderfully colorful array of animation. Joined by three unlikely companions-library books who have come to life-Richard is forced to confront his fears and find the courage he didn't know he possessed.

Some stories have been retold so many times by different authors, or have such obscure origins, that attempting to pinpoint a specific author is a bit silly (e. Omniscient Morality License : The eponymous Pagemaster takes a cowardly child and subjects him to all sorts of deadly situations. Casci's original screenplay included a story arc for the protagonist, Richard Tyler (played by Macaulay Culkin), who begins the tale as a boy who hates reading, but by the end of the film, learns to love reading. A number of books based on the film exist, including an illustrated book attributed to David Kirschner and Ernie Contreras, illustrated by Jerry Tiritilli, which contained large passages from the Casci screenplay without giving Casci writing credit. The Pagemaster was also fraught with WGA problems as David Kirschner and David Casci duking it out for story credit, which is prominent in the film’s Wikipedia page as one of the most expensive WGA investigations of its kind back in the day, so it’s also notable for that mess. He then finds himself trapped inside the library, where he must battle his way through literary classics come to life if he is to find his way home. It seems to have slipped beneath the cracks post-Disney acquisition of the 20th Century Fox studio catalog, and whilst I imported a Blu-Ray of it years ago it seems like this film’s cult status is questionable given its lack of memes generated and tiny fanbase. Adventure opens Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea onto the floor and the pair of heroes are attacked by a giant squid up the ladder.

The animation in the film was produced by Turner Feature Animation, [2] headed by David Kirschner and supervising animator Bruce W. I wasn’t exactly a fan of Horror as a little kid, Horrible Histories was as spooky as I was willing to go, however due to a variety of circumstances I learned I couldn’t avoid horror forever. Richard’s beleaguered father attempts to build him a treehouse, which he won’t dare use, and he conks out his dad with a bucket of nails attached to a rope which he uses in lieu of the stepladder. When Richard and his friends are traveling over sea, he sees Captain Ahab, whose entire crew is quickly wiped out by the whale, which then circles back to attack Richard's boat as well. One of those films that opened up my imagination and one that stuck with me even though I didn’t rewatch it often. But after reluctantly undertaking an errand for his father, he gets caught in a storm, which forces him to seek refuge in a library. As far as he could tell they didn't cause mercury poisoning, earthquakes, or any of the host of other things that Richard was afraid of. You could show far worse films to your children than this, even if it left very little pop culture impact, I’ll always treasure its ability to whisk me away to the early to mid nineties with one touch of a play button.
