To end on a positive note though, the utterly amazing performance of this brush not only puts manual toothbrushes to shame, but also makes their Pro range (I was using a Pro 2000 before) feel inferior. When unboxing it, I was at first somewhat regretting the purchase, as it really just felt normal and the build quality and feel is perhaps not quite as high as the branding and packaging hyped it up to be. The vibrations can initially feel like they're shaking your skull, but once you get used to them, you end up with a better brushing and cleaning experience. The whole experience also wants you to stare at your phone's screen during the brushing session, which is not necessarily something I want to do in my morning routine. The modes all maintain the same oscillations (brush movement back and forth) per minute, but the oscillation angle differs.The Series 8 (the version I tested) adds another cleaning mode, super sensitive, so you're better off sticking with the Series 7 if you have your eyes set on this brush.

My favorite part about the iO is the digital interface, something I didn't know I wanted in a toothbrush. It did not take any getting used to when I started using this brush, which has not always been the case with other electric brushes I've tried. I feel like a similarly good experience could be derived from a cheaper model, like the series 6 or 7, but it's nice to know my series 8 is the same as the one in the TV ads.

Once you're done, the app asks if you've brushed your tongue and flossed, which is a nice nudge to do those things for better tooth health. I'm honestly still not sure how long it will last, or how it would hold up if I happen to drop it some day- but for now, the whole user experience and functionality has really made me enjoy one of the boring chores in the day- brushing my teeth. Unfortunately, the iO suffers from the same issues as other app-connected electric toothbrushes I've tried: It doesn't always accurately detect where I'm brushing.You might think you're reaching everywhere, but you could constantly be missing the back of some teeth, as my dentist kindly told me a few years ago. The quick charge feature that allows you to charge the brush, for 5-10 minutes, and be able to brush your teeth when you discover your brush is flat is great. Following along in the app, you get a timer and a real-time look at the areas you haven't brushed yet.
