About this deal

Maybe you should have watched it a 3rd time as he clearly states (multiple times) that the reason he doesn't want to stop down further is that image quality degrades due to diffraction. But shooting outdoors can be a different proposition, particularly on a windy day that’s buffeting your lens as well as your subject. The optical path is upgraded and includes a top-notch FLD (‘Fluorite’ Low Dispersion) element, in addition to four SLD (Special Low Dispersion) elements.

If you like, you can use the optional Sigma USB Dock to set up two switchable custom modes for autofocus speed and stabilization behaviour, meaning you can get the lens working just the way you want it. Anyone who gives this lens a negative review is either against Olympus no matter what, has never seen the lens or is out of touch with what wildlife photographers actually need.

Alright the second shoot was at a site for Buzzards and Red Kites, it would be a great test for the converter and AF accuracy too! Like all Micro Four Thirds lenses, pixel-level sharpness visibly deteriorates if you set the aperture much smaller than this, due to the inevitable onset of diffraction. I highly recommend all the new lens owners to experiment with both mechanisms to see, which will bring them better results. It also benefits from four focus buttons around the mid-section of the lens barrel, which you can use to start or stop autofocus, or to apply a preset focus distance.

This generally requires fast shutter speeds to combat motion blur, which coupled with the relatively small maximum aperture, means that you’ll often need to use high ISOs, even in bright sunlight. Autofocus is super-fast, image stabilization is highly effective and image quality is highly impressive in all respects, with the caveat that sharpness drops off noticeably when combining close focusing distances with the longest zoom setting.IS comes with the weather sealing and freeze-proofing that is normally reserved for Olympus' series of Pro lenses – though it doesn't feature the Sync-IS system featured in Pro glass (which works in tandem with the in-body image stabilization of Olympus cameras, to provide extra stability), instead offering 3-stops of compensation via lens IS. What tips it over into the Canon camp though is the fact that the rotational direction of the zoom ring is the same as it is in own-brand lenses, meaning it slots into an existing collection more naturally.

It would also provide more reach and be less bulky and heavy with the body and lens than those other lenses. But this doesn’t come with the same operational limitations that you’d get with DSLRs: the viewfinder image remains bright and clear, and autofocus still works remarkably well. Infinity and 6m-Infinity, with the latter speeding up the autofocusing if you don't need to shoot closer than 6m away from your subject. When the wavelength is much smaller than the aperture width diffraction is not an issue, and 18mm is way beyond visible light. However, recognising that bokeh evaluation is subjective, we have provided a few examples for your perusal. In terms of features, the lens offers an IS switch for turning the 3-stop image stabilisation on or off and an AF/MF switch for selecting the focusing method. MyReality: The AF in the E-M10 is contrast detect only and moreover, 15fps is available only in AFS.

Still, the MFT system is designed to let you craft your own setup, so ultimately it's down to you which lens feels best! They tend to be more affordable than these types of lenses, too, though with an understandable trade-off in terms of raw sharpness. With a 100mm lens on the MFT format giving a view equivalent to 200mm on full-frame, the smaller format means telephoto lenses are effectively longer but also more portable – a clear benefit to action and wildlife photographers, at least. Truly enjoyed your thorough evaluation of the Zuiko 100-400, too, and how your work shows such a ‘telephoto’ can be one amazing ‘macro’ lens!Potentially one of the OM System’s/Olympus’ 100-400mm’s biggest selling points is its compatibility with the firm’s MC-14 and MC-20 teleconverters. There are few examples of Oly 100-400 with TC attached in my friend’s Rosta Stach review: http://www. Tripod Mount Rotation– Olympus can rotate its tripod mount 360°, Panasonic only 90° and only to one side. He is also an encyclopedia when it comes to all manner of cameras, camera holsters and bags, flashguns, tripods and heads, printers, papers and inks, and just about anything imaging-related.
