Annarah Cymone as Leeza Scarborough, the mayor's devout daughter who uses a wheelchair following an injury. The late actor was best known for Friends but brought his signature wit to plenty of characters not named Chandler. There's a reason, however, the Angel's fate and Leeza's regression aren't made more clear, as Flanagan wanted a bit of ambiguity to linger at the end. Dying in her parents' arms, Pruitt attempted to feed her his blood so that she could be brought back to life. Therefore, the events in Midnight Mass may not take place on the same timeline, though it's entirely possible that Maddie's horror novel was inspired by true events.

This ultimately led to the Angel flying poorly, as opposed to its normal speed (which was pretty damn fast and precise), and probably dying in its attempt to make it 30 miles to the mainland for shelter before the sun could incinerate it (more on that in a bit. Sadly, that project ended up falling apart, but it’s hard not to wonder if his work on the would-be film ended up influencing the creation of Midnight Mass.As is so common in Netflix shows, the often pitch-black aesthetics occasionally make it challenging to actually see what the characters spy in the shadows. The narrative wants to portray his choice as entirely wrong-headed, and he is quickly shown to regret his decision, but when most of the series’ other “good” characters are also making choices based on their proud faith in the Christian version of God, the implied falseness of Ali’s choice doesn’t sink in. While it's a sad ending for Leeza (though maybe not as sad as Warren and Leeza losing their entire families), it's good news for the world overall, right?

Kate Siegel as Erin Greene, Riley's childhood sweetheart, now a schoolteacher on Crockett Island and expecting a child. Midnight Mass is a fun read that I didn't want to put down and served as a nice distraction from the lengthy tome that has been my primary reading material of late.Yet I also think Flanagan would rather rely on long silences and jump scares — and, to give him credit, no one is better at a well-timed jump scare — to stand in for a deeper exploration of what horror is. Gugino starred alongside Siegel in 2018's The Haunting Of Hill House and its follow-up, 2020's The Haunting Of Bly Manor. So maybe I will never watch this wonderful, harrowing show again – but Midnight Mass will stay with me for ever.
