The Whitaker family from Odd, West Virginia, is arguably the most famous inbred family in the United States. The same series was refined after thirty years with little maturity and expansion added to it making it a book titled Created Equal (2010). Laita’s first book of non-commercial work, Created Equal, is the result of an eight-year-long, cross-country project featuring 8×10 black and white portraits of Americans from a wide array of cultures, occupations and backgrounds. I have no staff, no interns, not even an assistant — a thoroughly one-woman labor of love that is also my life and my livelihood.
