Whilst the style and the tone are dramatic in nature, it’s not inaccessible either, as it allows the reader to jump in easily, getting lost in the narrative.

As a history of London (and England) it's nice in that it's not too dry and involves a little bit of fictional aspects.

With his now trademarked epic scope as before, it manages to recapture an accuracy and sense of character which shows a master clearly at the top of his game. There was no question of murder, since, by definition, both parties were consenting to the business. In ‘The Forest’ that is less important as we follow families through the generations with real world events are largely in the background. Set in the New Forest which is located in the south of England this goes all the way back to 1099 as it charts the progress of the region and all those who dwelt there.
