About this deal

McFarlane (Don’t You Forget About Me) brings a welcome dose of reality to the fake office romance trope with flawed, honest, but still endearing protagonists. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. The first few chapters were light and witty with a lot of banter between this group of friends, and McFarlane has such a unique voice, that reading her books always feels like catching up with an old and trusted friend, and I was drawn in straight away. My Best Friend’s Wedding might’ve been a funny film but relieving its plot doesn’t feel funny in the slightest.

Mhairi McFarlane | Goodreads Between Us by Mhairi McFarlane | Goodreads

after the hiccup with my first MM book and learning to go into her novels not expecting romance, this was a completely different experience, and one for the better. Born in Falkirk, Scotland, she schooled in Nottingham and advanced her studies at Manchester University where she graduated with a degree in English Literature. Tragedy is an early catalyst, but it also brings Finlay into the picture and what a welcome addition his character makes to this story! With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Harper Collins, Harper Fiction for the much appreciated arc for an honest review. McFarlane (after If I Never Met You) delivers a well-developed work of women’s fiction with a romantic endcap. As I've said before, sometimes, I feel that McFarlane's books can have too many characters, and the friends in particular, are usually there for the light relief, but here the friends were intrinsic to the story, and the messy family dynamics explored through the book also really weighed in as part of the plot. Just Last Night" not only shows you loss, but also secrets that are kept not only from Eve, but from other people as well. At its heart this book is about friendship, and I loved how McFarlane explores these 4 characters and there friendship over the years, with the ups and downs.

While this focus makes sense given that it looks like this book is categorized as a romance novel, I myself would have enjoyed more of an emphasis on Eve’s grief and her relationship with Suzie. stars, I'm not sure I liked the group of friends characters so much, they seemed a bit too self-consciously intellectual and alternative. I enjoy Mhairi McFarlene's writing and the second half of the book was much stronger than the first for me, but this just wasn't what I was looking for. When, at the start of the book, Suze is squashed by a car, it sets a journey of discovery in motion for our heroine, Eve. This was my third book by Mhairi McFarlane, so I thought I was ready for an emotional but fun rom-com, but I wasn't prepared to cry so much, feel such despair, anger and grief!

Just Last Night: A Novel: McFarlane, Mhairi: 9780063036857

With good reason; This book was amazing, with lively characters, funny dialogues, beautiful language and a wonderful story. One night a tragic event occurs that forces Eve to confront difficult truths about her friend group. So, if you’ve read and loved Mhairi McFarlane before, or if this would be your first ever (and it would be a great first ever, to be fair), then let me say, you’re going to absolutely adore it. I found Eve's narrative to be compellingly introspective, and McFarlane depicts her feelings and emotions with great empathy.
