The author has obviously drawn from his vast legal experience to fill us all the gaps of what happens behind the scenes in a court case, and it was honestly like I was in court watching it all unfold. Photograph: Antonio Olmos/The Guardian ‘Political points of view have moved from the logical to the emotional hemisphere of the brain’ … Robert Rinder. Consequently, there is no pleasure to be had in the authorial voice, which mostly strives towards a sense of: Will this do?

Books by celebrities can be pretty hit and miss so although I like Rob Rinder’s Tv persona and humour I wasn’t sure if this would translate into his first novel. Rinder still brings joy to TV – his facial expressions when he competed on Strictly Come Dancing are seared into my brain – but in recent times he has made serious and moving documentaries, including an exploration of Israel and Palestine and My Family, the Holocaust and Me, both for the BBC. I’m afraid that I did not particularly enjoy the style of writing, which I found a little amateurish. And I am here to assure you that this smart, twisty and captivating courtroom mystery is well worth your time. They are both Jewish, with single mothers, from working-class backgrounds, navigating an Oxbridge-dominated profession. Adam has personal reasons for trying to clear Jimmy’s name despite his guilt seeming to be obvious and he works hard to find out the truth of the case before trial.

It is the second half of his year trying to gain acceptance into the Practice in preference to his fellow pupil, when his pupil master is given a seemingly hopeless case to defend.Young, enthusiastic, determined and dedicated to the truth and justice, we follow Adam's journey through the courtcase and what Adam has to endure as someone who doesn't quite fit it. Though his pupil master is leaning toward establishing reasonable doubt, Adam is convinced of Jimmy’s innocence and tries to gather evidence that would prove the same often attracting the ire of his pupil master who is happy to let Adam shoulder most of his caseload while he pursues other interests. The story holds a magnifying glass up to the criminal justice system, exposing levels of corruption and injustices which are an uncomfortable truth for the reader. His courtroom includes a gavel and flag of the United Kingdom, neither of which is used in British courts but are on display in American courts and televised court programmes, and his show has been criticised as " The Jeremy Kyle Show set in a small-claims court".

Susanna then told him, as she offered her support: "I know how close you were to Rocco," while her pal admitted the loss of Rocco had left him feeling "lonely". High profile successful police officer DI Grant Cliveden heads to the Old Bailey to give evidence in a difficult case. The book takes you through the life of a baby barrister, and all the hard work, long nights and sometimes personal feelings, that goes into fighting for tenancy during pupillage. DI Grant Cliveden is the country’s most famous detective, “with the kind of good looks which, if not quite Hollywood level, were of soap heart-throb standard”. As they work, Rob and Monica get to know the people who staff these hotels and uncover the inspirational, poignant and heart-warming stories of the communities around them. For a first book this was good and was good enough that I didn't hear the authors voice running over all the characters. When people hear my voice, they might assume I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth — or some other orifice — and that I spent my childhood holidays basking in five-star hotels, but the truth is somewhat different. The novel's main plotline is the murder trial, but of course, no one is lucky enough to only have one case to work on at a time! She had a certificate signed by Dwight D Eisenhower, commemorating her work, framed on her wall, but she, too, never talked about what happened or what she had done.
