Some time ago, Time carried an adaptation from Lisa Miller’s book ‘Visions of Heaven: A Journey Through the Afterlife’ in which she quoted Andrew Newberg, a neuroscientist and professor at Thomas Jefferson University and Hospital who has made his reputation studying the brain scans of religious people—nuns and monks—who have ecstatic experiences as they meditate. Led by Duane and Sandy Hammack of Sacred Journey Ministry, this event is tailored for Pastors, Missionaries, and Christian leaders in the church and market-place. In particular, this chapter traces his theory of the progressive ascent of the soul in his allegorical interpretation of the Exodus in his Homilies on Numbers and the union of the Bride and Bridegroom in his commentaries and homilies on the Song of Songs. The book was really easy to read in a way that felt simplistic - I think they could have made it a lot shorter.
