When they have finished and gone Creed starts to collect his things in readiness for his own departure. There are some creepy moments but the way Creed (and the narrator) deals with everything just makes it more humourous. transfixed by the play of a mysterious light amidst the monsoon rains - before a towering geyser of boiling water bursts from beneath the streets to scald him into oblivion. This one has it all: from a mysterious maniac who was hanged before World War II, the original Nosferatu, shapeshifting succubi, a killer toilet, costume parties in loony bins, a grinning cat, the legacy of Aleister Crowley, guest appearances by Jack Nicholson and Princess Fergie, plus so much more!A best of both worlds book; entertaining crime fiction in the middle bookended by gory and nightmare inducing horror (the opening stanza is is incredibly vivid and disturbing, equally so for the ending). And in amongst the chaos of it all is a strangely humorous approach to our principal character of Creed. In 2010, he was made the Grand Master of Horror by the World Horror Convention and was also awarded an OBE by the Queen for services to literature. His best novels, The Rats and The Fog, had the effect of Mike Tyson in his championship days: no finesse, all crude power. Hoewel hij uitblinkt in zijn werk als politieman en met niemand ruzie maakt, weigeren toch bijna alle collega's om met hem samen te werken.

Creed By James Herbert - A Passion for Horror Book Review: Creed By James Herbert - A Passion for Horror

Nobody True continues the theme of life after death, being narrated by a ghost whose investigation of his own death results in the destruction of his illusions about his life.

I read this as a 14 year old school girl, and the fact the story remains as scary to me today, some 25+ years later is testament to James Herbert's fantastic imagination! The tunnel prevents their walkie talkies from working and they aren't expecting the gang to do the robbery in there. It was a well-paced if unbelieveable story of modern demons and and arch-demon Belial as seen through the eyes of a papparazzi determined to seek out the "great photo".

Sepulchre by James Herbert | Goodreads Sepulchre by James Herbert | Goodreads

The Survivor (1976), his third novel, concerned the sole survivor of a plane crash who begins to experience visions of the afterlife. Yes, he is dealing in horror and bleak subjects, but there’s never a moment taken to lighten the tone. Not necessarily one of his best (that would be “Magic Cottage”), but well worth the read and a reminder for me of why I got hooked on his books in the first place.Various biographical and critical pieces by and about Herbert have been collected in James Herbert: By Horror Haunted, edited by Stephen Jones, and also in James Herbert – Devil in the Dark, written by Craig Cabell. Mostly, the female behavior was so off-putting, the main character inaccessible, and the whole thing a strain. I had read this book during the early months of the COVID-19 lockdown, but never got around to updating it on Goodreads. If you were to ask me if I would read any more books by James Herbert my honest answer would be, unless it was recommended to me, I would have to say no. Some of the creature descriptions veer too far into silliness, undermining any threat or fear they might hold.
