About this deal

Beth Leeson and Flora Braid used to be best friends, but that was 12 years ago when Flora’s children Thomas and Emily were 5 and 3 years old. When Jim Skelf dies unexpectedly, his wife, Dorothy, daughter, Jenny, and granddaughter, Hannah, are left at the reins of his funeral home and PI operation. Has Flora’s children been captured by aliens, became friends with Mulder’s sister and replaced by cute, little aliens wearing human costumes?

Zannah the oldest child (though much older than her years mentally) really got into being the detective and relished trying to solve the unexplainable mystery. Against the advice of her husband, the calm and mild mannered Dom, but with the encouragement of her enthusiastic teenage daughter (Su)Zannah (who thought that sleuthing was a much better option that studying for exams), Beth takes on her own investigation of epic proportions to try and uncover the mystery. As Dorothy discovers a series of secret payments made by Jim to another woman, Jenny looks into an adultery case and Hannah sets out to find her uni friend, Mel, whose disappearance the police won’t take seriously. By midpoint, I no longer gave a darn about any of the characters (with the single exception of Zannah, the teenaged daughter of the protagonist) and I certainly didn't care about the solution to the weird mystery. To view the purposes they believe they have legitimate interest for, or to object to this data processing use the vendor list link below. In particular, her daughter Zannah is a hoot, coming up with clever observations and just offering general insight and support for Beth throughout the whole ordeal. I have read and loved her books, specially the Spilling CID and Hercule Poirot series but this book was a let down.

No, I thoroughly enjoyed this book for the journey, and the ending was sufficient to wrap everything up. Sophie Hannah’s Haven’t They Grown (also known as Perfect Little Children) is a dark, perverse and thrilling mystery novel that will keep you on the edge of your figurative seat. Her relationship with Dom is great but the standout character for me is their 16 year old daughter Zan (Suzannah) who I just love. The only interesting, and frankly, believable character in the book was Zannah, the 17-year old daughter. But the 2018 version is over a third bigger and with toppings, it will take you over the 100-calorie mark. I did feel the scene with the teacher and the racism an unnecessary filler but on the whole I thoroughly enjoyed the whole story no matter how impractical most of it was and I found myself happily engrossed.

Beth is an amazing protaganist – she’s curious, and she’s determined, and most importantly she’s relatable. The premise of this book instantly intrigued me and I jumped at the chance of taking part in the blog tour. Believe it or not, bagels are surprisingly high in calories and sugar — just one contains almost as many calories as a Mars Bar thanks to the refined white flour. This book is incredibly engrossing – simply because the premise is objectively impossible, which means that any conclusion drawn will be shocking, unexpected, and somewhat twisted. Beth’s own personality and those of her family are beautifully drawn and will ring a bell with most normal, loving families.Queen of Halloween dresses up as a PEACOCK with 10-person entourage while her husband rolls up as an EGG. Based upon a brief glimpse, Beth becomes convinced that her former friend Flora has somehow managed to have 2 children who have not aged during the past 12 years. A teatime favourite, a 71-calorie crumpet in the Nineties was a good, low-calorie option, even with butter and jam. The other is that when a premise is so amazing like this one, it's best to keep one's expectations tempered when it comes to the actual explanation. But the plot itself is so utterly wild that you can overlook the fact that you want to punch Beth in the throat.

A Dark Matter is the first in a new series from the criminally underrated Johnstone, whose Breakers, shortlisted for the McIlvanney prize, is a devastatingly bleak, touching look at the life of a teenage Edinburgh burglar. Twelve years later, Beth decides to check on her and spies Flora coaxing her two small children, Thomas and Emily, ages 5 and 3, out of their car, which is crazy, because that’s how old the kids were when Beth knew them. Here, Tessa Cunningham compares the sizes and calorific content of everyday food products and ready meals from the guide with the same items in today's supermarket aisles. Just because she knows that her former best friend lives near the football ground, that doesn’t mean she has to drive past her house and try to catch a glimpse of her. While she and Dom butt heads over her immense fascination with the Braid children, and just how far she’s willing to go to get to the truth, she remains steadfast in her resolve – and thankfully so.No one thinks a pork pie is a healthy option — the 2018 serving here (half a pie) has 66 per cent of your saturated fat per day. Now that I’ve read my first Sophie Hannah book it certainly won’t be my last and I’d happily recommend “Haven’t They Grown”, it’s well worth a read, just keep in mind it’s entertaining fiction not a passable real life scenario. She is currently working on a new challenge for the little grey cells of Hercule Poirot, Agatha Christie’s famous detective. From this premise alone I truly had no idea what to expect by way of explaining Thomas and Emily’s seeming inability to grow. If he isn’t faking – he might be a fugue patient, his memory loss caused by trauma – this a case that could make her career.
