Although there were many other things to do, Harry began to wonder if his family thought that he had really run away. After frolicking in his sans water state, almost missing dinner, and confusing his humans, Harry realizes he can go home again by appeasing the scrub brush deities on occasion.

He jumped into the bathtub and sat up begging, with the scrubbing brush in his mouth, a trick he certainly had never done before. He goes on an outing with the children--everyone that passes, human, or dog, starts to laugh--he decides it is time to lose the sweater. A boy cares for all the neighbors' plants while they’re away on summer vacations—and in the process turns his home into a leafy paradise.

Per the child, "I liked it because he (Harry) doesn't like the roses, but a bird got to use it (the sweater) for a nest and grandma got him a new sweatshirt that was polka-dots. Use frosting to attach graham crackers for ears, vanilla wafers or banana slices for cheeks, blueberries for eyes and nose, and a raspberry for the tongue. They would be entertained, and they would learn not to run away from home, because you get sad when you do that.After their split, Graham wrote and illustrated her own stories, beginning with Be Nice to Spiders (1967). It's a fun book of innocent mischief and great illustrations that clearly reveal how much fun Harry has getting dirty.

One may not initially realize that the illustrations are rendered with the use of what appears to be only four different colors, yet the color scheme works extremely well with the beach setting that was portrayed in the book. Graham was born in Toronto, where her father, Malcolm Graham, was a doctor and her mother, Florence (nee Bloy), a nurse. Harry becomes very dirty after playing in the streets, at the railroad, and in the dog park to the extent that, covered in dirt, he becomes a black dog with white spots. The two page spread of Harry playing tag with the other dogs is a good example of the green, yellow, black, and white color choices.
