About this deal

The princess is a total brat who after getting something precious back from a kind frog (a golden ball - I'm being serious) she runs away from him and refuses to keep her end of the bargain when he is able to retrieve the ball. The National Army Museum in London showcases a wide range of military attire that includes frogging—from the most utilitarian, to the highly ornate, as seen in Colonel Francis Strange’s 1869 portrait (Fig. This is also an ode to mothers, to sisters, to a community that stands together; to support, survival, and following dreams.

Frogged by Vivian Vande Velde - OverDrive

A few monologues spoken by men in this book are shoe-horned in—probably by request of the editor—an attempt to add dimension to the wife beater Jax, two of which aren't even spoken by him but by his best friend and brother instead. When almost-thirteen-year-old Princess Imogene is turned into a frog, she puts into practice lessons from the book, The Art of Being a Princess, as she tries to become her less-than-perfect self again. At the end, historical events filter themselves into the plot in a way that felt like a forced attempt to create a logic behind the structure. I'm all for telling the stories of marginalized groups, but this novel is a highly accessible bingo card, rendered in solid language. The beauty of Memphis, the music, the fragrance of the magnolia blooms set against the history of racism. The strength of these women to survive and thrive, how they lean on and learn from each other, is formidable. Vande Velde again plays with characters caught in a virtual reality game in this overlong but satisfying novel.

Frogged, thankfully, did not have a bratty princess - more like a snarky one who didn't care to act like a lady or in her case a princess. The other thing that I found hard to keep up with were the abrupt changes in the timeline which often left me wondering where I was and who was it, I now was reading of. I really wasn't sure how things were going to get resolved, and even when I thought I might have an idea, that turned out wrong. A spellbinding debut novel tracing three generations of a Southern Black family and one daughter’s discovery that she has the power to change her family’s legacy.I definitely think that younger ages would enjoy this tale, since older ones might find the ending predictable. One should be able to say of a princess "She was as good as she was beautiful," according to The Art of Being a Princess (third revised edition), which the almost-thirteen-year-old Princess Imogene is supposed to be reading. This is character-driven novel, which I love, but in this case, I wish it had a bit more plot to drive the story forward. While of course having the lynching is pivotal to the book (and autobiographical) I think also having (and I am sure I have missed some examples): one character raped by another – as an infant; one character perpetrating a bodged gang murder which leads to the murder of a child; one character having lead a squadron into the mass murder of some children in a military action was far too much.

The lush descriptions had me thinking this would be a simple fun ride, but the descriptions become tediously overwritten. I wasn't rolling on the floor laughing by any means, but she helped the book stay lighthearted and comical despite what could have seemed rather dire circumstances. It begins with Miriam arriving at her sister August’s house with her children in tow and a face full of make up covering the last beating she received from her husband.I kind of felt bad for frogs and their bad wraps even though I will still never get near any of them or at least not any toads *shudder*. Yet what I was left with was the power of sisterhood, of self-love, of believing in God-given talents, of understanding and the of amazing healing powers of community. The author is very good at creating vivid characters--both likable and not, and it's easy to like our froggy heroine as she strives to get back home.

I enjoyed the quirkiness of the story but I kind of got tired of how things kept going from bad to worst without any break. The real trouble begins when a (rather pushy) frog, who tells Imogene he’s a prince beset by a witch’s spell, tricks her into kissing him.I'm a lover of fairy tales and all that goes with it - dangerous journey's, daring rescues, princesses who save themselves (girl power! Vande Velde previously reworked classic fairy tales in The Rumpelstiltskin Problem and Tales from the Brothers Grimm and the Sisters Weird, and she now turns to the “The Frog Prince.
