About this deal

Stephen Smith, who presented Fig Leaf: The Biggest Cover-Up in History, wrote: "Nature's jockstrap remains an impressively elastic device, two millennia after it was first twanged into place. Two sculptures from Ancient Greece were removed from an exhibition at the same Al Riwaq venue because of the nudity.

Yet skin was often a magic ingredient, and so it’s not wholly outrageous to wonder whether or not there’s something esoteric about the familiar image of Bartholomew: the living man standing with all of his muscles and viscera exposed, holding his skin. Firstly, it is a concise example of compelling and successful ‘video art’; secondly, it really made me think. An exquisite pain is a severe pain, and not at all pleasant to experience, unless, of course, one is a masochist. In a very physical way, she replaced her memory with the pain of others, abashing her grief to the point of insignificance. Following on from the Titian exhibition at the National Gallery, I turn my attention to the sculpture, by Damien Hirst, of Saint Bartholomew, a saint who was reportedly flayed alive. Exquisite Pain – Damien Hirst’s statue of St Bartholomew – is found in our South Transept, just inside the main door of the church. In the case of the artist’s story, the same photograph is repeated: that of a red telephone in a hotel room, the telephone from which she heard that her love affair had ended. A man and a woman tell stories of ordinary and not-so-ordinary heart-break, each story accompanied by a single iconic image.

That is to say, drama and unhappiness are all in our hands - to see or not to see the emotion is plainly the problem of choosing the vanishing point. As I have read the Chinese translation, I'm going to type in Chinese, good to know the database of Goodreads actually got this edition as well.

In the 18th century, the church fell into disrepair and bits of it were used for commercial purposes. It is here on loan thanks to the very considerable generosity of Damien Hirst, one of the most outstanding artists of our time. He was executed in Armenia, though unsurprisingly, there is absolutely no record of him nor of anybody being flayed alive for religious reasons in that region.Bartholomew was one of Christ’s disciples, one of the 12 apostles who were with him Jane the crucifixion and witnessed the Ascension. According to the myth, Marsyas had the hubris to challenge Apollo, who was God of music as well as many other things. Initially, of course, a Catholic institution, it was reformed under Henry VIII, when the Priory was dissolved. I've had a couple of kidney stones where I would have used the adjective "exquisite" to describe the pain -- somehow it just fits the intense, highly focused pain.

Maybe it was the muted, somber grey of the cover, or the shiny blood red of the pages that drew me in; most likely it was the painful subject matter that I can closely identify with as I begin divorce proceedings. The classic iconography of the saint sees him naked, his muscles exposed, his skin hanging over his arm – and in his hands, the instruments of his torture. That is the art which most moves me, which most inspires me, and by which I feel known and instructed. Then through her motif of repetition, she tells the story again and again until it's so worn out, she's almost sick of her suffering to the point where it's not suffering anymore. One of Hirst’s most exciting and darkest pieces I’ve ever seen is a short video where he – jolly and charismatic – explains the best way to shoot yourself in the head. After the Ascension, Bartholomew travelled to India and then Armenia as a missionary preaching the gospel. I do want to go and see it again, so it looks like I’m going to have to make that trek to Czechia, which brings us to Damien Hirst. Bonami did admit, however, that some of Hirst's more "gratuitous" works were omitted from the Doha exhibition.
