About this deal

I didn't like the thinly veiled references to real people (just change a letter in the name, they'll never know! That’s not to say forward planning is pointless, but unless you can actively contribute something practical towards your future growth right now, there’s no point worrying about the things you can’t yet control. Having both been married before, we knew what we wanted to say, the promises that were loving and realistic to make. All these cruel people who would seemingly make Martin's life worse for daring to be who he really is feels so grossly sad.

Yet, it is clear Martin values his friendship with Ben a great deal, with a pathetic sort of hero worship or neediness, that he doesn’t seem to have nor require from his wife. The male consultant told me in the follow-up appointment that doing another round would be “like trying to stick the tail on the donkey”.The relationship is formalised when Martin takes the rap for Ben following a serious accident while they are at Cambridge University. That meant Justin’s three children and his mother; my parents, my best friend Emma, Justin’s best friend Paul and their respective spouses.

The Party by Elizabeth Day - review - Evening Standard

A veces tu vida entera puede cambiar en un único segundo, porque ese único segundo no existe aislado: está conectado con una cadena infiníta de minutos, días, semanas, meses y años que lo preceden. Any "Author Information" displayed below reflects the author's biography at the time this particular book was published. When you emerge, blinking, into the light, you have to rebuild what you thought you knew about yourself. Los personajes están llenos de matices, de claroscuros y el lector se implíca con ellos precisamente porque están magníficamente descritos, con un fino trazo de ironía, y un mucho de inteligencia emocional. But I felt like what was the point I read it as quick as poss to get it over with and move on to an interesting book. Viv Groskop in The Observer praised Day's writing and described the book as "a beautifully written novel whose quietly discomfiting tone stays with you for a long while afterwards".

I've recently been told by my dearly beloved that I seem to be really into books with likeable characters, well, here's the proof of my range. It’s immediately obvious that something happened at Ben’s party, and as the plot progresses the story slowly begins to unfold from four different angles; Martin’s interview with the police in the wake of the party; the night of the party itself, flash-backs to Martin and Ben’s blossoming friendship through school and university and, finally, diary entries from Martin’s wife Lucy. Sent to boarding school on a scholarship, Martin Gilmour becomes obsessed with a fellow student, the charismatic Benjamin Fitzmaurice. The novel is framed by Martin’s interview in a police station following some unknown-but-terrible event at Ben’s lavish 40th birthday bash, the eponymous party. Judy describes The Party as a ‘dark, haunting story’ and Richard praises Elizabeth Day’s ‘beautifully crafted writing’.As Elizabeth Day reminds us in the epigraph to The Party, her title has three meanings: social, political and contractual. We continued to sob throughout the readings each of our parents gave and as we spoke the vows we had written to each other. The friendship between Martin and Ben allows for much thought from its readers —they were so different. Martin Gilmour proviene de un entorno desfavorecido, pero gracias a su amistad con Ben Fitzmaurice tiene un pie dentro de un mundo donde el dinero y el poder ancestrales fluyen entre familias con apellidos sonoros.

Elizabeth ‘She helped me believe it was all going to be OK’: Elizabeth

And the novel enacts this rancorous legacy as it tortures its protagonists and paints itself in red, black and envious green on the canvas of the world it envisions. At Ben’s 40th birthday party, the great and the good of British society are gathering to celebrate in a haze of champagne, drugs and glamour.

I thought this book was spellbinding —the plot was compulsively stimulating - interesting and captivating! Soon Martin is enjoying the high life at the Fitzmaurice family’s estate and becomes an extended family member.
