Perhaps it was for the best that Eliot’s most lovably untamed heroine, Maggie Tulliver of The Mill on the Floss, turns down two suitors and then drowns in a flood instead of joining that procession. It's a bit slow in pacing, there's a whole lot more family drama and romance than I expected, but I could see it all playing out in front of me.

Ingenious really is the only word I have for this novel, and that is mainly because I have previously read Part of the Family. Eliot’s literary earnings, brokered by Lewes who in effect served as her literary agent, supported Agnes, even after Lewes’s death.

Objectively it would be easy to dismiss Gabriela’s double life as far-fetched but Philby convinces by writing so well about her characters emotions and the logistics of her increasingly complex life that it sucks the reader in without hesitation.

A Double Life tells the parallel stories of two women, Isobel, a journalist, and Gabriela, who works for the Foreign Office. I wasn't aware that this was part of a series until the final few pages, the abrupt 'shock' ending left me confused until I spotted a few other reviewers having also have been caught out in a novel that has been marketed as a standalone. Only in the seclusion of her bedroom is her imagination freed: each day of deception is followed by a night of dreams described in soaring verse. It’s reflective of his state of mind when he’s saying it, not reflective of his state of mind back then.

The Double Life of Bob Dylan Volume 2, by Clinton Heylin, review: The most definitive biography yet Do we know Bob Dylan now, though? When I was there for four weeks, it was tough because outside of the Arts District, it is a small town. Filed to story: The Double Life Of My Billionaire Husband Novel Free Online “Sebastian, you must have misunderstood things here.In the book, I refer to comments she makes about “beady-eyed bodyguards,” and of course, at the time she wrote it, she doesn’t name Victor Maymudes, but it’s obviously that’s who she means. I don't see the purpose of running Isobel and Gabriela's stories side by side as they don't really link up and I expected there to be a moment of realisation at the end, but there wasn't. George Eliot and George Henry Lewes: their relationship caused Eliot’s brother not to speak to her for 23 years. What I will say, however, is that the novel is excellent at creeping unease and fear with both characters feeling it. You have the classic story where Dylan tells [Robert] Shelton that he came to New York and lived as a rent boy for a few months. The interview that I use from 1965 with Izzy is fabulous, but it’s clear the amount of resentment that he feels even then. So when she claims to have seen what appears to be a violent attack on a woman on her way home from a drug-fuelled squat party scepticism abounds, but Isobel is determined to uncover just what she stumbled upon.

A Double Life examines the actions and consequences of two believably flawed female protagonists whose lives are on very different paths but against all expectations about to collide in the most unimaginable way. With its multilayered account of a young society woman’s mysterious transformation into a poet, the novella explores a host of social, spiritual, and aesthetic questions. At points I was slightly annoyed - who is Isobel and how does her storyline intersect with Gabriela's?
