About this deal

Told with laugh out loud humor and the perfect wit Confessions of a Forty-Something F**k Up is the perfect book for any woman (or man) whether young or old that feels like she isn’t enough or in the right place in her life. As Nell's story unfolds there is lots of laughter, lots of tears, life throws many curved balls when you are a childless, unmarried forty year old with a boyfriend who has a spreadsheet for everything, parents who have accepted " Alexa" as a family member, an eighty year old best friend who has more "get up and go" than you have ever had and who wears dungarees and silver plimsoles, three best friends with husbands and children who are all living the dream.

We pushed it back six months just as we went into the second lockdown but we went ahead anyway and through word of mouth it went down extremely well. As Nell strives to gain control of her career, finances, love life and friendships, plenty of laughs and moments of clarity come to light in this wholly enjoyable contemporary fiction title. Her voice was so easy to listen to and she made me laugh so much especially when Nell was being snarky or sarcastic. Nell seems to be winning at life in this book and things seem to be very positive for her, but as in real life, a few curveballs are thrown her way and everything gets thrown off balance. It's referred to as "The Fear" in the book - and the way it's addressed and described is accurate; simple; and oddly inspiring. I felt so many different emotions on each page like I laughed, cried (actual tears), felt sad, felt annoyed and related that I feel such a mess writing this review. A common theme, hashtag 'live your best life' hashtag 'gluten free brownies rock' etcetera etcetera (I take some poetic license there). Female friendships, the way some are domineering and will always show the 'my life is perfect', look at my Insta and look at my fancy wardrobe and stylised persona.

A novel for any woman who wonders how the hell she got here, and why life isn't quite how she imagined it was going to be.I loved her friendships with Cricket, Fiona and Arthur and I got so caught up in her life that I was telling my husband about her antics as if she was a real person. These titles have sold in twenty-five territories and achieved worldwide sales of more than one million copies (making the bestseller charts in the UK, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovenia and Serbia). Writing a good book review, professional book reviews have reliably told me, should never ever contain anything personal from the reviewer – anything personal has nothing to do with a good review. When you get these kind of haphazard rom-coms (a genre I will be trademarking) you expect them to be fun and silly and light-hearted. Whilst I'm aware this book is also a fiction and should be a fantasy, it really holds a mirror up to us as a society.

The thing is, no matter how settled you think you are, life always has alternative plans, and Nell's life is no different. I'm not saying this to be trite or to make you feel better, but believe me when I say this: the people who matter will see you, no matter what.Told in a diary style format by Nell (first person) be prepared to embrace what everyday life throws at you and how you deal with it . Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher / author for providing me with a free electronic copy of this book for review. This was full of unexpected surprises, it had me laughing so much, also I did cry to there were some upsetting moments, but I’m so glad the book ended on a high note. I have read countless books about mothers - post natal depression, mums struggling to cope, mums struggling with society’s expectations to be perfect. Nell was broke and house hunting, ending up renting in a shared situation with Edward, who rented in the city during the week, and went home to the suburbs to his family on the weekend.
