While I found the start of this book a little slow compared to the other Ann Cleeves books I have read once I got into it I wanted to keep reading and found myself saying just one more chapter. I love Anne Cleeves Shetland books but I wasn't really in the market for starting on the 'Vera' books so this stand alone book was just what I was after. I first read this around twenty years ago when it came out but apart from the chapters set in Morocco, nothing about this story rang a bell (well I have got through a fair few books since I read it! She was attracted less by the ornithology than the bottle of malt whisky she saw in his rucksack when she showed him his room.

They’re able to reason, they aren’t in denial that they’ve died, and they probably didn’t die abruptly or in a tragic way. The descriptions of the areas that the story unfolds in really added weight to the story for me, particularly just how different the lives of young people can be depending on the income earned by their parents.

The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged.
