Fast's novel was adapted as a 2004 miniseries by the USA Network, with Goran Višnjić in the main role. It was led by Toussaint Louverture, a Haitian former slave and emblem of slavery’s hoped-for abolition throughout the Americas. His focus is Louverture’s “character and ideas” rather than the world around him, producing a somewhat ahistorical idealist portrait.

He died a martyr of freedom, and ever since his memory has been venerated, especially but not only among people of African descent. The film won four Academy Awards ( Best Supporting Actor for Ustinov, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design) from six nominations. Educated by the Jesuits, he was fully literate and spoke the local kreyòl dialect as well as French. In his lurid 1826 romance of the Saint Domingue uprising, Bug-Jargal, slaves ransack the French plantations while L'Ouverture yells brutally in Haitian Creole "Touyé blan yo toute! The prospect of a free black state founded on the expulsion of its white community horrified the western world – this was half a century before the civil war liberated the enslaved peoples of the United States. Thus, when Gracchus reveals that he has bribed the Cilicians to get Spartacus out of Italy and rid Rome of the slave army, Caesar regards such tactics as beneath him and goes over to Crassus. The film was first released on VHS in 1985 by MCA Home Video [52] in a reconstructed version that reinstated most of the footage cut from subsequent reissues. To try to prevent this, Gracchus channels as much military power as possible into the hands of his own protégé, the young senator Julius Caesar. In a careful study of a representative hamlet, Môle Saint-Nicolas, Hazareesingh speaks repeatedly of Toussaint’s “success” in shaping a new sort of political community. The love theme for Spartacus and Varinia is the most accessible theme in the film, and a harsh trumpet figure was created for Crassus. was a Thracian gladiator who, along with Crixus, Gannicus, Castus, and Oenomaus, was one of the escaped slave leaders in the Third Servile War, a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic. But after Laveaux’s departure, he could not rely on the successive envoys sent by the republic to represent its authority in the colony – even Léger-Félicité Sonthonax, who had proclaimed the emancipation of slaves in 1793. The television series Spartacus, starring Andy Whitfield and later Liam McIntyre in the title role, aired on the Starz premium cable network from January 2010 to April 2013.

Spartacus's name was also used in athletics in the Soviet Union and communist states of Central and Eastern Europe. For much of Toussaint’s correspondence, he used the Baggio and Augustin printed edition that is marred by omissions and faulty transcriptions. Crassus was put in charge of eight legions, numbering upwards of 40,000 trained Roman soldiers; [37] [38] he treated these with harsh discipline, reviving the punishment of " decimation", in which one-tenth of his men were slain to make them more afraid of him than their enemy. Stanley Kauffmann writing for The New Republic said of Spartacus, "entertaining if mindless show, with many well-done scenes, intimate and panoramic. In 1975, Triumvirat reached the apex of their commercial success with the release of Spartacus, a classic "prog rock" album.
