About this deal

It reminded us all as we were entering a new decade that there were bands left over from the ‘Brit Pop’ era that still mattered, bands that still cared, bands that would continue to deliver great albums, bands that would never let us down. Ash worked with Raskulinecz at the recommendation of Andy Gill from Gang of Four, who told Wheeler he "got the best drum sound he's ever heard" from using Raskulinecz. The album manages to combine exhilarating pop songs: Burn Baby Burn, Shark, World Domination with some beautiful, tender moments: Shining Light, Candy, Someday, Sometimes, and Walking Barefoot.

Wheeler also wrote the lyrics for all of the songs except for "Submission", which was written by McMurray; "Shark", which was co-written by Hamilton and Hatherley; and "Nicole", which Wheeler co-wrote with Hamilton. Cherry Bomb" was recorded in the style of " Girl from Mars", a track from 1977 [31] that also originates from the Nu-Clear Sounds sessions, begins as an acoustic ballad about Wheeler's brother. Its United States release came nearly a year after its initial UK release, causing the band to pause plans for their next album and to tour Nu-Clear Sounds in the US instead. It was directed by Mike Valentine, and is based on films such as The Big Blue (1988) and The Abyss (1989). Orpheus", "Clones", and "Starcrossed" were also included on the band's third compilation album Teenage Wildlife: 25 Years of Ash (2020). Wheeler wrote it after witnessing a peace demonstration and Hatherley wrote the middle eight guitar riff.

Free All Angels - Wikipedia

Hell, I know that's not what Ash are really getting at conceptually, but it makes a lot of sense, and I think that on Free All Angels they've expressed it. Meltdown does rock harder, and with more snarl, than any of their previous albums, but they still can't help but reveal their melodic sweet tooth. The song was initially planned to include samples of The Beach Boys' songs that had been edited to fit the track, with Wheeler's vocals dubbed over them but the band left out the samples when they realized they would have trouble clearing the Beach Boys' parts.

According to Wheeler, some of the recorded performances sounded "a little bit rigid" because the band were "testing the editing powers of Pro Tools a bit too much". These days, it's summer and I have to go spend eight hours of my day in a climate-controlled building, staring at a computer and making copies.
