About this deal

Photograph: Arsenal Football Club/Stuart MacFarlane Wenger celebrates Arsenal winning the Premier League at White Hart Lane, London, in 2004.

The fact that he was also a suave, well spoken and intelligent man made him almost the perfect adversary to Sir Alex Ferguson who although might have been a very intelligent man himself, he did not come across the same manner that Arsene Wenger did. Wenger commented on the growing number of staff employed by Arsenal who looked after the marketing and branding of the club. Amy Lawrence's 'Invincible' is a much stronger and powerful entry on a similar issue that does it justice. With your culture and vision, I believe you have the qualities to be a top exec, such as a CEO or director of football, at a club.I was expecting a move away from the traditional biographies of sport men who speakers of pivotal moments in their careers to a psychological rendition of his 22 years at the helm of Arsenal.

Having won numerous trophies, and led the Invincibles to an unprecedented unbeaten league season in 2003-04, Wenger then had to help the Gunners through the next stage of their development when they moved from Highbury to the Emirates Stadium , a move that was followed by a nine-year trophy drought. I don't think anyone going to read this ever thought Wenger would lift the lid and dish out some nastiness or air vendettas against people, but what I expected was more emotion. Unfortunately, his own fans that we gooners once were, would, I am sure, argue vociferously that the rivalry will be as fierce and tension filled as always and that if the second point was correct, why did we not win the Champion's League? I confirmed the latter, by winding my car window down and politely wishing him well for that evening's match against Aston Villa.Wenger cynics and detractors will be quick to point out his stubbornness, his blinkeredness and his inflexibility, but fans will acknowledge Wenger’s qualities for what they are: determination, relentlessness and a single-minded pursuit of success. This book veers around all over the place, there are no clear themes to any of the chapters, adjectives and descriptions are continually repeated and crucially there's almost nothing of interest in the book other than a good anecdote about Niklas Bendtner at an airport. If it hadn't been so short (thank you Kindl for telling me how many hours I had left) I would have stopped reading this quickly. In My Life in Red and White, Wenger charts his extraordinary career, including his rise in France and Japan where he managed Nancy, Monaco and Nagoya Grampus Eight (clubs that also play in red-and-white, like Arsenal!
