About this deal

Canon 50mm F/1.8, Canon 6D, ISO 100, F/2.8, 1/250th These lenses are closer at F/2.8, but the Sigma is still much sharper. Here are a few more 100% crops so you can see for yourself… I am just going to come out and say it, there is no comparing the Sigma 50mm F/1.4 DG HSM Art to the Canon 50mm F/1.8. The Sigma is better in every aspect with the only exception being the cost. But still, there is a reason for the comparison you are about to see/read. Put simply, the Canon 50mm F/1.8 is sort of a clunker. It’s AF is loud and screechy, and as mentioned above, the manual focus is a real pain. Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Canon EF - CameraLK Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Canon EF - CameraLK

In designing the lens with a large 85.4mm diameter, and placing the widest elements within the front group, greater peripheral brightness is more easily attained when working with larger apertures. This design also lends itself to minimizing vignetting throughout the aperture range for greater clarity and detail across the image frame. Super Multi-Layer Coating I’ll admit there is still a thrill to having a lens which can open to f1.2, but in my tests the Sigma simply out-performed the Canon across the board and at a lower price. If you want the best 50mm with autofocus for your Canon DSLR or mirrorless via an adapter, the Sigma 50mm f1.4 Art is it. Canon has since released a newer, higher quality 50mm f1.2L lens, but only in the RF lens mount for its full-frame EOS R mirrorless cameras. This is an outstanding lens, but one that’s considerably pricier than the Sigma. See Gordon’s Canon RF 50mm f1.2L USM review for more details. Earlier this year, Canon announced its first full-frame mirrorless camera, the EOS R, whose new RF mount features a large 54mm diameter and a shorter flange distance than the EF DSLR mount. According to Canon, this mount will allow for “faster and lighter lenses with higher performing optics” than ever before. There is really no comparison here. The Sigma is again better than the 50mm F/1.8. It is sharper, has less distortion, and less CA. There is literally not one thing about the Canon 50mm F/1.8 that I find to be superior to the Sigma. Compared Wide Open at F/1.4 and F/1.8 Canon’s EF 50mm f1.2 L USM has always been a benchmark for Canon owners, a lens which most photographers, especially portrait ones, aspire to having in their collection. It has the joint brightest aperture of any lens in the current Canon EF catalogue, and is the only 50mm in the EF range to carry the ‘L’ status. So what if it also carries a price tag to match? It’s the lens to go for if you’re a Canon owner who wants the best 50mm around, right?

As far as sharpness is concerned, this lens puts in an excellent performance, especially in the centre of the frame. At f/1.4, sharpness in the centre is already outstanding, although clarity towards the edges of the frame lags behind somewhat. Sharpness towards the edges of the frame improves as the aperture is stopped down, reaching very good levels by f/2.8 and outstanding levels by f/4.

Above from left to right: Nikon Z 50mm f1.8 S, Sigma 50mm f1.4 Art, Zeiss Otus 55mm f1.4 (Sigma and Zeiss in Nikon F-mount version) The focus rings of the Sigma and EF lens are somewhat stiffer than that of the RF lens but all three are pleasant and accurate to use. Because the Sigma and RF lens have wider focus rings, they are a little easier to turn than the thin ring of the EF lens. For video, you may find the two DSLR lenses more practical because they offer a precise distance scale on the barrel whereas with the RF lens, you must refer to the distance scale on-screen. However none of them offer hard stops. Minimum focus distance This is the optical reference regarding sharpness and contrast at every distance and it also sports very low longitudinal CA. But it is even larger and heavier and four times as expensive as the Sigma Art. Plus it has one big deficit: no auto-focus! Looking closer into the resolution results the new Sigma Art even manages to beat the mighty Otus by a small amount in center performance and it shows less light fall-off in the corners. That is an outstanding feat. Regarding Bokeh the Sigma Art and Zeiss Otus are pretty close with the Zeiss producing the bigger Bokeh balls in the center but having a stronger cat’s-eye effect towards the corners. As a member of Sigma’s renown Art series the Sigma 50mm f1.4 Art is expected to perform on a very high level. It is positioned roughly between standard 50mm f1.4 lenses and the top-end models from Canon, Nikon, and Sony in price. The big question then is how does it to compare to those below and above it in price? Does it offer a sufficient step-up from normal 50mm f1.4 lenses to justify the price, and does it give the pricier models a run for their money? To find out, Thomas and Gordon teamed-up to give the Sigma 50mm Art a real workout and compared it against a whole slew of other lenses including the Zeiss Otus 55mm f1.4, Canon EF 50mm f1.2L USM, and Sony FE 50mm f1.4 ZA. We’ve completely updated our original review from 2014 with test-shots on the 46MP Nikon Z7 and the 42MP Sony A7R II. So if you’re interested in which high performance standard prime lens to choose for your camera system, you’ve come to the right place!

A Hyper Sonic AF Motor, along with an optimized AF algorithm, produces quiet, smooth, and fast autofocus performance that benefits this lens' use in a wide variety of situations. This AF motor also permits full-time manual focusing control for refined precision by simply turning the focus ring at any time. Sigma Global Vision - Art

Drones & Aerial Imaging

Full time manual focus can be applied by simply adjusting the focus ring at any time. Manual focusing is a pleasure as the focus ring is very smooth to operate and quite heavily damped. Closest focusing is 40cm from the sensor plane, which is fairly typical for a lens of this focal length and aperture.
