About this deal

Headset (Replacing Spacer): Because you have to replace one of your bike’s headset spacers with the Shotgun Pro spacer, you’ll need 10mm of headset spacers that can be removed. The unique cradling “u-shaped” saddle of the Mac Ride was a big hit with our testers as it helped to keep riders firmly on the saddle during more aggressive rides. The Mac Ride does not offer mini handlebars, but does offer optional small grips that you can mount on the inside of your grips. It is also the only mountain bike kids seat on this list that offers a height-adjustable footrest. While similar to the Tyke Toter because it attaches via the seat post, the front of the UrRider actually rests against the top tube for added stability. This prevents the seat from pivoting to the sides like can happen with the Tyke Toter (depending on the diameter of your seat post.) DROPPER POSTS: Another reason to choose the Shotgun or 2.0 has to do with dropper posts. For mounting a Shotgun Pro (or Mac Ride) to the seat post, your dropper post has to have 2 cm of exposed space between the seat collar and the dropper seal. MOUNTING LIMITATIONS: Best for use on a bike with a front suspension fork (bikes without suspension fork often don’t have enough clearance between the front wheel and down tube). Fits bikes with top tubes 35 – 68mm wide and down tubes from 35 – 100mm wide.

Sharing the load across these locations helps to minimise the clamping force required, and the rubber protection means your frame is safe from damage or scratching. With a weight limit of 60 pounds, the Shotgun Pro has plenty of room for kids to grow. By the time your kid is 60 pounds, they’ll definitely be too tall for you to want them on your bike anymore! (For reference, the Mac Ride’s weight limit is also 60 pounds, while the Original Shotgun seat’s weight limit is 48 pounds.) If someone hasn't asked about your specific type of bike then post your own question - there's usually someone who has fitted a seat to a similar type of bike. Put a helmet on your kid – with a kid on the front you are 100% responsible and you don’t crash. You just don’t. But a helmet will help them get used to riding with a helmet on and encourage good practice. The Shotgun Pro includes two spacers, for use on two bikes. Installing the Shotgun Pro spacer replaces 10mm of standard steerer spacers on your bike.

The best child bike seat you can buy in 2023

Other features that Lauren enjoyed out on the trails was the fixed position for the little rider’s feet. On other seats she has had issues with the foot rests spinning or moving. The knurled aluminium foot pegs give good traction and the two-length adjustable rubber straps kept out little riders feet in well. The Shotgun seat feels safe and secure, allowing us to enjoy the trails together The Do Little includes an adapter to allow it to easily mount to these different styles of bikes, which not only allows the seat to sit lower on the bike, but makes getting on and off the bike much easier for the adult.

You plan on using the seat with other bike styles, such as a cruiser or bike with a step-through frame If fact, because the Pro sits higher than the Shotgun classic and the Mac Ride, adjusting where that saddle sits along your top tube is going to make a much bigger difference in the comfort of your ride, as you’ll see below. Take for example, TWT Mom Carrie and her husband Brian. Carrie is 5’10 and Brian is 6’1. Their daughter is 3.5-years-old and 42.5″ tall (and 43 pounds). For reference, Carrie has quite a long torso! We’ve reviewed a selection of the best bike child seats in a variety of different styles to keep both child and parent feeling safe and secure whilst riding together. Before we get to our roundup, though, we’ve provided a short buying guide on what to look out for when shopping around. We’ve ridden easily along canal towpaths and woodland bridleways. She’s even been down the Hope Line at Gisburn Forest, with cries of “Lean Dad, Lean!” as we whooshed around the berms. When first testing the Shotgun Pro with its saddle set to its factory setting, the saddle was actually too high and it made the descents less fun as our little tester was now taking up more space directly beneath Lauren’s chin – sometimes even interfering with her vision as she assumed a lower position on her bike. (It should be noted that Lauren is a shorter rider around 5’4″ and this will be discussed more below). She also enjoyed the stylish mini grom bike seat! It is truly is the new and improved seat from Shotgun. It is still padded and plush, but with a new sleek design. In addition, the seat angle was effortless to adjust. This is another adjustment you need to make before hitting your favorite trails. The Mac Ride mounts between the headset and the seat post, so the seat’s placement is independent of the slope of the top tube. However, with bikes with deeply sloped top tubes or step-through frames, it eliminates your ability to step through the frame. One small item we would like to see included is a small piece of rubber to go between the underside of the downtube and the skewer that the foot pegs attach to. The size of the frame of one of our bikes has that piece just touching the frame. (But this isn’t the case for all bikes.)

The shotgun seat has a range of adjustment to fit top tubes from 30 – 68mm wide, and down tubes from 30 – 100mm wide. We have not found any analogue mountain bikes that are outside of these specifications. There is plenty of adjustment available to suit different frame sizes and it all clamps snuggly and securely. Getting going! This video is a helpful guide for setting up the shotgun seat, but does not replace the fitting instructions, safety information and disclaimer included with every seat – which you must read before installation. Headset (Total Spacer Height): In our testing, we discovered that the total number and the total height of the spacers under your stem will also impact fit. Once the Shotgun Pro spacer is installed, there must be clearance between the Shotgun Pro’s front clamp and your stem when the handlebars rotate. Join thousands of happy mountain bike families around the globe. With your child riding shotgun, you'll foster a love of the outdoors and a passion for riding bikes. The only problem you'll have is getting them off!

Another benefit of mountain bike child seats is their simplistic nature. They allow kids to experience riding front and center without the often complicated fit and bulkiness of traditional child bike seats. Each time you remove the MTB seat, you also have to release the rail latch to shorten the horizontal rail to allow for space to take off the seat. And then of course lengthen the rail and close the latch when you’re attaching the seat to your bike.

We’ve tested mountain bike child seats on kids ages 2 to 8 and have found that age 2.5 and 4 tend to be the sweet spot for both child and adult riders. Long story short, we're yet to find a mountain bike the shotgun seat won't fit – with the only exceptions being listed below: The shotgun seat will not fit: A favorable difference Lauren recognized almost immediately was the fact that she did not have to bow her legs out as much as she pedaled. This was especially useful during the uphill portions of her ride. With the Shotgun Pro seat sitting higher than other mountain bike kids seats, it gives parents more room to pedal. While this is not a huge performance issue and has never limited Lauren in her riding with other seats, she sure enjoyed the extra space for her legs.

Best front mounted bike seats for babies, toddlers and preschoolers

All of the seats we listed above will work for casual riding, but the Tyke Toter and the UrRider are specifically designed for only casual riding. Both seats are bulkier and include integrated handlebars for the child. On the flip side, they are easy to mount and are more affordable.
