About this deal

Its real strength, though, is that it can control weeds that other weed killers tend to struggle with, including horsetail/mare’s tail and ground elder, as it did on an overgrown bank and a disused veg bed where other weed killers had failed miserably. It’s a good bet if you need a powerful weed killer but you don’t want to spray something really nasty on your plot.

The best weed killer will show visible results within 1 – 2 days. My advice is to look for a large capacity that will treat a surface area of at least 100 m² as these will generally offer the best value for money. Prioritise weed killers that kill the entire plant, including the roots, to prevent the weed from re-sprouting . However, the results are reliably positive, albeit slow – it takes around one week for clover to start visibly yellowing and dying. There may still be the occasional dandelion that needs to be removed by hand after using Weedol Weed Killer, but it does a fairly comprehensive job of clearing the lawn (without harming the lawn itself). This weed control is exceptionally strong, with a single 2 L bottle treating up to 3332 sqm. It would be ideal for those with a badly overgrown allotment or garden, but it’s also a good choice if you’re after a super strong weed killer for deep-rooted weeds. Specification: Active ingredient: Glyphosate & Diflufenican , Results In: Within 48 hours or least 4 weeks depending on the weed Glyphosate – kills the majority of plants, including perennial grasses, so it’s not one that you want to accidentally get on the lawn or flowerbed. It is effective at killing well-established weeds because it works from inside the weed itself. After being absorbed by the leaves and stalk of the weed, glyphosate spreads to the rest of the plant, including the roots. In recent years, it’s developed a reputation for being dangerous; however the jury is out on a definitive conclusion. Some studies have found it to be carcinogenic, whilst others consider it safe for humans to use as long as the instructions are followed. Glyphosate is also thought to negatively affect wildlife such as bees and aquatic life. It can stay in the soil for a long time as well. That is not a problem with this pet friendly weed killer. It is completely waterproof after only 3 hours or so and a those all too frequent showers won’t do it any harm. Dandelion, daisy, clover, cleavers, nightshade, bittercress, the list goes on and on. We have so many different types of weed to contend with in the UK that we always need a bottle or two of the best weed killer at hand but which ones that are safe for out pets. Best pet friendly weed killers that are safe Gloves and covered shoes are needed again and I’d recommend wearing tough gardening shoes because I dropped the unit on my foot and it left a bruise. Flazasulfuron works on weeds when they first start growing, as well as when they are in their ‘adolescent’ stage. It’s absorbed by the roots and then works its way through the rest of the plant.

The plastic nozzle is better quality compared to Roundup’s similar offering. It has a finer spray and although it’s a pressure pump too, it doesn’t need as much effort to prime the nozzle. The slightly wider handle means you can use more of your palm to press down and get the pressure ready. On the downside it dribbled much more weedkiller than Roundup. This is not necessarily due to any shortcoming of the herbicide itself, but related to how plants absorb moisture. Most plants absorb more moisture in the cool temperatures of the early morning, but stop when temperatures rise in the afternoon. Some people also choose to use homemade natural weed killers, using a solution of white vinegar, salt and liquid dish soap.

Destroy weeds without killing plants and wildlife with the top weed killers for every situation

Pelargonic acid is the most commonly found active ingredient in organic weed killers. It’s a naturally occurring acid in geraniums. This acid is generally considered effective at controlling the growth of smaller broadleaf weeds (under 15 cm tall).

The spray action on the bottle works well, and doesn’t feel too flimsy like it can on some products, and the top of the bottle is quite ergonomic so it fits comfortably in the hand. The five litre version of this weed killer comes in a large container with a pump action handle on top and an attachable spray wand. Thirty pumps of the handle will get you somewhere around 10 minutes of continuous spraying, and the twist nozzle lets you choose between a concentrated blast or a wider and finer spray. Selective weed killer is usually safe to use on lawns as it won’t kill off the grass. It will only target and kill specific types of plans (eg. weeds). Selective weed killer is normally clearly sold as being lawn safe. Therefore, if a weed killer doesn’t mention being safe for lawns, don’t use it on grass (unless you don’t mind the grass getting scorched). Tough weeds are violent versions of perennial weeds and will continue to grow from pieces of root left in the ground (even after your dedicated efforts to kill them!). Examples include; Brambles, Horsetail and Ivy Bindweed Spraying during windy conditions can also cause the chemicals to spread to areas that you did not intend to treat, killing plants that you wanted to save.

READ NEXT: How to Clear a Garden Full of Weeds Ingredients Commonly Found in Selective Weed KillersThis bottle contains 360 g of product, enough to cover a 1666 sqm area. It does require mixing before application, but it comes with a measuring cap included which is very easy to use. It can be applied using either a watering can or a sprayer. The company claim that it will prevent weed regrowth for 3 months, but we haven’t had that long since we used it so I can’t confirm that. I will say though, that after a month the paved drive way is still looking good. Like most weed killers I’ve tested, this product does contain glyphosate which isn’t wildlife friendly. Flower heads should be cut off weeds first, especially dandelions. Finally, look out for a weed killer that comes with a pressure sprayer to make application easier . Some weed killers will need diluting which can be time consuming; however, they often work out cheaper.
