About this deal

Connecting the audio cable allows the audio to be recorded via the camera, and monitored accordingly. The LS-P1 has 90º directional microphones and a Zoom mode offering targeted focus (Image credit: Future) Performance Much like “Pro Capture” on recent OM System cameras, the P5 comes with a pre-recording function that can capture 2 seconds of audio before you press “Record.” This is a nice video about using parabolic mics for bird recordings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRXPy6ybPiA

Olympus LS-P4 HI-RES Audio Recorder with TRESMIC 3 Microphone

Marc and iveljay, thank you very much for your expert advice. It has given me a lot to think about. So, do you want a device that will easily travel everywhere with you, ready to snatch everyday sonic surprises at the press of a button? Or will your recording sessions be more planned affairs, with the aim of making a definitive, quality recording? Did I have the recording level too high? Is there some sort of limiter that is producing the sound? Is the mic just no good for this? I don't want a large microphone at the moment, but I am prepared to spend more on a better one. I will let you know how I get on with it in the next few days, and how I like the Rode Lavalier when it arrives.

We tested the LS-P1 with a mixture of speech and music sound sources, and found that selecting a Manual recording level and using the Limiter gave the best results. Automatic recording resulted in some clipping and distortion when recording music. I think that there is a setting for plug in power in the menu, ideally this should be off for your current set-up but shouldn't be a problem if left on. In reading through the manual, it gradually occurred to me that the mic settings are turned off when an external mic is plugged in. It doesn't say that explicitly, so I was not entirely sure, but I believe you are correct.

The ME66 that Marc uses is of course far superior, bigger, and more expensive, you pays your money.... Having now received the Rode Lavalier Go mic and tried it out for some days, I have to say that I like it. We’ve omitted covering a range of other features on the LS-P1 that will be more relevant to other types of user – people recording meetings, lectures and conferences, for example, who will often perform basic editing and file management on the device.) Build and handling Vloggers or videographers can attach the LS-P1 to their camera hot shoes via the included adapter. A screw thread adapter facilitates connection to the rear of the unit; the other end slides into the hot shoe and is tightened via a screw clamp.Out of many use cases, a particular up and coming one is of course filmmaking: in combination with the latest Olympus camera models such as the 4K-video-boasting OM-D E-M1 Mark II and OM-D E-M10 Mark III or the all-new Olympus PEN E-PL9, the LS-P4 is the perfect device to produce professional travel, documentary, event, wedding or music videos with Hi-Res sound or to create excellent audio for YouTube videos. Hi-Res audio capturing through latest technology Arranging files on the device is effected via the Menu button; this calls up a choice of five locations to save recordings: Folder A, B, C, D and E, plus a dedicated Music folder – which all correspond to the subfolder structure that’s displayed when attaching the LS-P1 to a computer. Result far more birds with clear recognisable song than heard before and no noise. Target was a large yew with a rooks colony a few hundred metres behind it. I'm reading about the Zoom products, and why field recording buffs are using them rather than the equivalent products from other manufacturers. It appears that the noise floor of H4n Pro and H5 is low compared to similarly-priced products from other competitors.

Some remote control features are included courtesy of Bluetooth connectivity, with users able to remotely start and stop recording, as well as adjust levels, change filter settings or microphone directionality via a free iOS and Android-compatible smartphone app. When using 16-bit recording modes, it is also possible to use the Bluetooth connection to wirelessly monitor the audio signal at distances of up to 10m.Nevertheless, the parabola is rather cumbersome and needs to be used as one's only activity. It would be impossible to concentrate on recording with such a bulky device and to take photographs as well! The P5 carries two AAA batteries (vs. one in the P4), so maximum recording time (on battery) for any given configuration doubles.

Olympus LS-P4 Review : Olympus LS-P4

The recording unit is 11x4x1.5cm and weighs only 75grams with the supplied ‘AAA’ rechargeable battery inserted.

The LS-P1 has 90º directional microphones and a Zoom mode offers targeted focus on the desired sound being recorded. (The feature is enabled via the menu system using a graphic not unlike the angle of view diagram familiar to photographers. If recording a static subject speaking, you’d favour a setting of +6; to capture as much ambient noise as possible, you’d go for -3.) Very few mics are good for long-distance recording. The ME66/67 does pretty well because of the high sensitivity and good off-axis rejection. They do not amplify the sound, but they are very sensitive to it. Parabolic are the true long-range mics. In any case, I think both those choices are off the table for Phil given budget and ergonomics. You can find lots of videos on youtube about people reviewing mics. Look for things like "on-location mic" or "boom mic" or similar to find mics meant to record at a distance. There’s a good choice of formats, too. The FLAC format offers better than CD quality as half the storage size and you can go down to MP3 if you are worried about eating into the supplied 8GB. It’s easy too Built-in memory for recording is doubled from 8 GB to 16 GB, and the microSD-based external memory capacity explodes from 32 GB to 2 TB (!).
