About this deal

An online chat with Zen over the weekend revealed that they don’t know what will be fitted by Openreach either. No. That original master needs to remain as the boundary between your premises cabling and their network, via the detachable frontplate. If you’ve ever had to deal with a persistent line noise problem (and dispute), believe me, it’s vital to have that demarcation point. Remove the front plate and you can prove that the problem is on Openreach’s side in seconds. Won’t A Joint Do? But if you are in the mood to change your old NTE5, then it won’t do any harm. The whole broadband thing constantly amazes me. I’m astounded that it ever works at all. I would suggest getting one. I can even fit it for you (or find someone local who can) if you get in touch! ! For ADSL/vDSL installations the lower half of the front faceplate can be replaced with a filtered faceplate such as the NTE2000, NTE2005, BT/Openreach vDSL Faceplate or VTE2015, this will give the same benefits of the bell wire filter with the addition of centralised ADSL/vDSL filtering. (Note, these are known as Service Specific Faceplates (SSFPs). The BT/Openreach vDSL version retains the original NTE5 lower front faceplate). It actually took quite some effort to break the old-style punch-down connectors of a good-quality NTE5. The new wire termination points may be tool-less, but once you’ve broken one (and it won’t be hard), you can throw the whole unit away.

Apologies if I am being dense but just trying to buy the correct type of cable in advance of the installation. The following applies to the faceplate labelled Openreach MK4. These instructions may not be suitable for later versions if introduced in the future. Now, I want to extend the connection to my data cabinet. I have one Cat6 cable so there are enough cores to connect filtered voice and filtered data signals but I have to land the cable in one outlet (as only one cable) but my question is how and where do I terminate on the data cabinet? I don’t seem to find a normal faceplate with one telephone and one RJ11 /RJ45 outlet. So how do I proceed? The master does nothing to affect REN. Additional phones should be fine until you run out of ringing current from the line supply. REN is not such a critical issue as it used to be, as many folks used cordless base stations with their own power supply to power the ring function. N.B.! This is an already-filtered output – connecting another filter onto this filtered signal will stop the broadband working. What on Earth Do I Connect Them To? TIA. (I’m hoping to stay clear of wireless, ie: have the router upstairs and connect to the tv & pc downstairs wirelessly, as its a solid built old house). In BT terminology, Voice Reinjection is the way to route voice signals from a VoIP service onto the existing home telephone wiring.

A good idea. Corded phones will keep working when the power goes off, unlike cordless. This is useful for the infirm and elderly who would not be able to diagnose power faults, restore service, and may well be distressed. Line dropped again to 2-3 mbps with multiple drops per day – plusnet texted to me say fault detected. Phone still ok.Openreach out again – apparently last engineer did not crimp the pairs properly – new down lead, line reset, 39 mbps. The A and B on the front are a filtered ADSL/VDSL signal. Add another filter downstream of these and the signal will disappear. Commonly-used world-wide but potentially confusing for the unfamiliar. It’s the “blues” on 4 and 5 you need to use.
