About this deal

If the patient is conscious, moisten their mouth every 30 minutes with water from a spray or dropper, or by placing ice chips in their mouth. If the patient is unconscious, use a spray, dropper or ice chips every hour. Thrush can cause pain, and difficulty with swallowing and chewing. Treat it with antifungal tablets, liquids or topical mouth sprays. Ask the patient’s GP, district nurse or specialist nurse to arrange treatment. Mouth problems can cause physical complications and be distressing for the patient. Involve the following specialists if you’re worried:

You have been told by your doctor that you have difficulty converting a component of your blood called methaemoglobin to haemoglobin. Please don’t be worried. Most people taking this medicine will not experience any problems. If you cannot use it at a different time, then rinse your mouth thoroughly with water after brushing your teeth. Wait at least 5 minutes before using chlorhexidine.Only use chlorhexidine lozenges and sore throat spray for a short time. Do not keep using them continuously. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have an underlying medical condition, are taking any other medication or complementary therapy, or if symptoms persist If you have anaemia, or vitamin deficiencies, your GP will be able to test for these and advise you how best to replace these vitamins. Changing or supplementing your diet could help prevent thrush in the future If you do get any side effects, even those not mentioned above, tell your doctor, dentist or pharmacist.

You are taking antibiotics called sulphonamides, for example co-trimoxazole, as benzocaine may prevent them from working well. If your baby is having difficulty feeding, or appears uncomfortable with signs of thrush, they may need some simple treatment. If your child is over four months old, speak to your pharmacist who may recommend an oral gel if they judge that treatment is necessary.Like other medicines, this gel may cause some side effects.
