Rat brain and serum lithium concentrations after acute injections of lithium carbonate and orotate” Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology (1978) Do you have a specific question that this article didn’t answered? Send us a message and we’ll answer

Most people get about 0.64-3 mg of lithium from food and water daily. This amount is extremely safe and has little to no side effects. Harari F, Langeén M, Casimiro E, Bottai M, Palm B, Nordqvist H, Vahter M (2015) Environmental exposure to lithium during pregnancy and fetal size: a longitudinal study in the Argentinean Andes. Environ Int 77:48–54 Emotional or stress-eating is a real issue for many people, and by stabilizing mood, lithium orotate could prevent it from happening.

The estimations of daily intake of oral Li are very diverse. It can vary, depending on its availability in the environment and in food products, from several to several thousand micrograms per day [ 23, 42, 43]. As proposed by Schrauzer (2002), the daily requirement for Li is 1000 μg/day for a 70-kg adult (14.3 μg/kg body weight). According to other authors, this is a cautious estimate, not reflecting individual differences that may require even higher consumption to maintain optimal health [ 17]. However, one should bear in mind that Li is not considered officially as a micronutrient; thus, these recommendations are only provisional and cannot formally be used in dietary practice [ 23]. While lithium is in your body, it affects neurotransmitters that are involved in the body’s stress reactions. The function of these neurotransmitters in stress reactions and lithium’s effects on them are outlined below.A study that included 1,206,174 men and women in Japan found an association between higher drinking water lithium concentrations and a lower rate of death during a given period. 7 When the researchers gave lithium to roundworms, a longer life span was observed. In a study involving fruit flies, lithium extended lifespan when administered throughout adulthood or later in life. 8

Ohgami H, Terao T, Shiotsuki I, Ishii N, Iwata N (2009) Lithium levels in drinking water and risk of suicide. Br J Psychiatry 194:464–465 An equally interesting aspect of the action of Li is its effect on morphological changes in the blood, resulting in modulation of the immune system response. It is suggested that this element has a complex immunomodulating effect, including suppressor activity and interactions between different classes of white blood cells [ 7]. As shown in clinical trials, Li induces granulocytosis [ 36] and lymphopenia [ 37] but increases the immunological activity of monocytes, NK cells, and lymphocytes, particularly increases the synthesis of IgG and IgM immunoglobulins by B cells [ 7, 38, 39, 40]. Going over 5 mg per day may result in acute nausea and tremors. Long-term high doses could lead to classic symptoms of lithium orotate toxicity, such as impaired kidney function. Thyroid and parathyroid glands may also be affected. The spectroscopic evidence for the neuroprotective effects of Li in clinical populations is much less consistent than in the preclinical data. Prospective studies have predominantly shown no changes in brain NAA levels during Li treatment. 8 – 11 A single prospective study reported a small NAA increase after 4 weeks of Li treatment, 3 whereas another investigation found an NAA decrease after 6 weeks of Li exposure. 12 Cross-sectional studies have also been inconsistent, with reports of greater 13 , 14 as well as comparable 15 – 17 brain NAA levels in Li-treated versus control participants.
