About this deal

More than half of the film is set before the 75th annual Hunger Games begin. Much of that time is spent deepening our comprehension of this savagely cruel society and heightening the stakes for the impending insurrection. For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey. How do the characters in the film demonstrate courage, self-control, perseverance, and teamwork? Why are these important character strengths? The highlight of the opening ceremonies is their arrival. The tributes begin their training after the festivities. According to Katniss and Peeta’s request, Haymitch tutors them together and tells them to keep their greatest abilities hidden from the other tributes. To start, this movie is one of the best I have ever seen. I LOVE the books, and this is probably one of the best book to movie adaptations I've seen in a long time. But before you go letting your 9 year old watch it, let's go over the story, as well as the pros and cons.

When Katniss meets Cinna, a young guy who dresses casually and uses very little makeup compared to the other stylists, she is pleasantly delighted. Katniss and Peeta are introduced as a pair at the opening ceremonies, a method that has never been done before. Katniss gets the moniker “girl on fire” as they race through the Capitol in a chariot while holding hands, their costumes glowing in false flames. The Hunger Games is the first in a trilogy of books published by Scholastic that has already become a literary phenomenon with over 36.5 million copies in circulation. Set in the future, one male and one female from each of the twelve districts of the nation is forced to participate in the annual competition called The Hunger Games, which is broadcast live throughout the country for the entertainment of the Capitol’s wealthy residents. Sixteen year old Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) volunteers in her younger sister’s place to enter the games, and is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy when she’s pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love. Overall it is great to see the novel brought to life on the big-screen. First of all, kudos to the actors - each does a marvelous job with their roles. Harrelson, Lawrence, Hutchinson, Tucci, Banks and the rest of the cast - they all nail their characters and do them honor.

The heart of the story is intact, unfortunately there are many significant elements from the novel entirely missing, or changed to the point they lose the depth of meaning they were intended to have. Unlike some of the sub-plot and story elements left out of the Potter and LOTR series, these missing and adulterated items matter greatly, and lessen the quality of the movie. I will give the producers credit for building Seneca Crane's role in an effective way that answers many questions for those that have not read the books. The victor is allowed to return home, and his region is lavished with presents, primarily food. The Capitol’s Games are intended to punish Panem’s 12 districts while also reminding them of the Dark Days when the 13th district was decimated for rising up against the oppressive and cruel Capitol. A new chapter in the Hunger Games franchise, directed again by Francis Lawrence, and starring Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler opens exclusively in theaters on November 17 ... Full Movie Details.

For Katniss, this entails avoiding archery. Her bow and arrow skills are unsurpassed after many years of hunting wildlife in the woods. During her private session with the Gamemakers, they award her an 11 out of 12 for her abilities and tenacity. To sum it all up, it is one of my all-time FAVORITES! The story is intriguing and well thought out, the violence is fairly bloody but not overly gory, swearing and sexy stuff are kept to a minimum, and the alcoholic character sobers as the movie goes on. There are great messages and lessons we can learn from this movie. I think it is appropriate for nearly all teens, but it's an iffy choice for anyone under 13 years old. Katniss considers her 4-year-younger sister Prim and her mother, both of whom have relied on Katniss for survival since her father perished in a mine explosion when she was 11. Use the movie's depiction of Panem -- particularly the relationship between the Capitol and the 12 districts -- to discuss how much kids understand about totalitarian governments and dictatorships. What does President Snow mean when he says he doesn't root for "underdogs"? Or that too much hope is a dangerous thing? Why are there more bleak portrayals of the distant future than optimistic ones? What are some other books and movies that feature a post-apocalyptic or post-war future? As the couple’s CG train zips between districts, we see how Snow’s stormtroopers clamp down on what little freedom remains, offset by the empty frivolity of life in the capital — a nonstop binge-and-purge banquet where wild hairstyles and lavish costume changes provide a distraction from an idle existence.

Did we miss something on diversity?

How does the movie compare to the book? What are the main differences? Is it different to see violence rather than to read about it?
