Her story is as unremarkable and boring as they come for this 'genre' and it's mostly because she refuses to really talk about anything in detail, lest she inspire a new generation of anorexic girls. So you get her babbling on and on about going into various hospitals and shitting on everyone she ever met in treatment, but you don't really get any depth or insight out of her so like...why write this thing? How to Disappear Completely is a valiant attempt to take other anorexia writing to task for, at best, glamorizing the disease and, at worst, providing a detailed how-to guide for "wannarexics." Osgood is clearly quite well educated and has done her homework on the matter, both as an anorexic herself and as a student of the disease. However, what the reviewer pointed out was very much my experience with the book: The story starts with the death of a young homeless man and one witness. As the story develops, we discover that Zara hadn’t been totally honest about what she witnessed and now a gang are out to silence her for ruining the life of a young and talented footballer. Something terrible happened in the woods with Nicolette, so she has to run away from home. The once popular high school girl is forced to change her identity and take on any temporary job she can, jumping from place to place, so she cannot be found.

But does she succeed? I'm not so sure. For someone determined to avoid triggers, Osgood spends a lot of time talking about them. For the most part her approach to not sharing triggering details of her own experience seems to translate into limiting all details of her own experience. At the same time, a tremendous amount of the research portion of the book is about triggers, and triggering books. What are your thoughts about the current trends in the YA book market?
