About this deal

The Guyver is loosely based on Yoshiki Takaya's 1985 manga series Bio-Booster Armor Guyver. Before the film, the manga was adapted twice. It became an OVA in 1986 and a 12-episode series in 1989. There's also a 26-episode series that came out in 2005. Like the film, the manga follows a teenager who stumbles upon a miraculous alien device and uses its power to battle a corrupt corporation. The manga follows a monster of the week format, in which Chronos (spelled "Cronos" in the manga) sends increasingly deadly alien warriors to defeat The Guyver.

Mercy Kill: After ripping out Crane's Control Metal, he begins to agonizingly melt. The damaged Control Metal has some kind of interaction with Sean's, prompting him to vaporize Crane with the Mega Smasher. But for some reason, its not a slow movie. And that's good. I think this is the first, live action performance of David Hayter. He looks like a very, young and generic 90's man. While transforming a human into a Zoanoid is more or less a natural process and needs little direct overseeing, by contrast, every phase of the optimization of a Hyper-Zoanoid is carefully controlled. Because each Hyper-Zoanoid is carefully designed to optimize the Zoanoid potential, each Hyper-Zoanoid is therefore also unique; they can be re-created, but this is rarely done.R-Rated Opening: Dark Hero, makes it clear within minutes that it earns its R rating, with some strong language, talk of cocaine smuggling, and two bloody deaths. Why did I enjoy it? Well it's just a fun movie. Though a lot of it is actually quite cheesy, especially the dialogue, there's nothing like a good old sci-fi movie with martial arts. An intimate scene between Lisker and Weber in the van as they wait for Striker & Ramsey. He mentions the two of them going shopping in Brazil, and she absolutely loves the idea. Mythology Gag: Crane's Guyver Zoanoid armor has the same color scheme and spiky motif as Guyver III with Guyver II's damaged control metal. For now, we’ll have to make do with Dark Hero – a more faithful yet painfully low-budget take on Yoshiki Takaya’s concept – or its predecessor, The Guyver. The latter is goofy, ridiculous and quintessentially 90s, but buried within it are some great monsters and cheerfully gooey mutation effects. If approached on its own terms, there’s much to enjoy about this trashy, straight-to-video oddity.

The animated version of Guyver is a lot more serious and meant for adults. It had a lot of gory violence and adult themes. As we got into script development, we realized that with the budget and schedule we had to shoot the movie, we’d probably be better off making it for a broader audience, like a PG-I3. [2] Release [ edit ] For starters, I am really glad that the film rights to "Guyver" has passed into more competent hands. Gone is the campy feel and laughable story of the first film, replaced with a more competent script and a serious science fiction/action feel that still threads the line of B movie-ness but is careful to not fall headlong into the category of "silly". When a Zoanoid dies, whether in human or battle form, his body will disintegrate with alarming rapidity; essentially, this is the same process that allows them to transform from one form to another. If you are a fan of Yoshiki Takaya's Manga series (but are unable to buy the comics or Anime series), it's best you see this live American adaptation first, not Screaming Mad George's first film which was released in 1991. At the camp, Atkins and his commandos prevent Crane from executing the archaeological team and safely evacuate them. However, Atkins is captured and his commandos are brutally murdered by one of the escaping Zoanoids. If you can get over the film’s blatant disregard for the property that inspired it, and enjoy it as a piece of B-movie madness, it’s actually a lot of fun. Jeffrey Combs shows up in the last act (playing a mad doctor, naturally), and as goofy and lumbering as they are, the various mutants have a curious charm. One of them looks a bit like an elephant. For fans of the Guyver manga or anime, the series is best remembered for the distinctive, oddly beautiful suit of bio-armour worn by its hero, its gallery of bestial Zoanoid enemies, and the bloody clashes between the two. Greater-Scope Villain: Crane the Big Bad of the film, but he is another cog in Chronos' system and still working for Gouo/Guyot, another Zoalord presumably equal in rank to Balcus from the last movie.

Shout-Out: The fight between the Guyver and the sword wielding drug runner resembles a fight in Batman (1989). Many Zoanoids resemble existing animals to some extent, usually mammals, birds, reptiles or arthropods. Others, however, appear bizarre and outlandish, with no relation to any known living thing. Zoanoids of this type are engineered for melee combat. They are immensely strong and typically well armored, but usually have little in the way of special powers or bio-weaponry. The vast majority of Zoanoids are Power types ( 筋力増幅型 , Kinryoku Zōfuku-Gata), bred to sweep into combat and crush everything in their path. Let's get this point out of the way first. It's not a brilliant movie. It's a low-budget movie, with some seriously bad acting (David Hayter seems to have about 4 facial expressions in the movie). So why do I find it so appealing.

The American version of the film, distributed by New Line, cut several scenes to focus more on action than humor. Producer Yuzna expressed confusion at some of the choices. [1] Reception [ edit ] The Uranus were said to be highly pleased with their Zoanoid creations, but after the Guyver-Zero incident, nevertheless abandoned them and attempted to destroy them.

After being threatened by his boss for his team's repeated failures to get rid of the Guyver, Crane merged with the damaged Guyver Unit. He fought Sean as a hybrid Guyver/Zoanoid, referred to as the Guyver Zoanoid, and was dominating the fight with his combined powers until his damaged Control Medal started to malfunction. With his Guyver suit starting to eat him alive, Crane was occupied long enough for Sean to destroy him with the Mega Smasher rather than let him suffer a very painful death. A text prologue explaining the origins of the guyver and zoanoids, as well as leading up to Dr. Segawa's predicament with the other zoanoids. Major scene transitions in the "director's cut" are accompanied by slash going across the screen with a two-note techno theme. None of these are in the VHS cut. Additionally, 3 violent scenes are not in the so-called director's cut:

Bloodier and Gorier: Than the first movie big time! Part of the whole reason the film was made as to emulate this part of the manga. The fight scenes are AMAZING!!! Bloody, brutal & fast paced stunning fight sequences, some of the best creature fights in movies, like an Adult version of a Power Rangers episode or movie. What is all done here & on display with it's tiny budget is truly incredible!!! A great piece of filmmaking. The action was also much more fierce. Hayter was even faster moving and more agile than Armstrong as the Guyver. It was done really well as were the hand-to-hand combat sequences. The special effects seemed to have improved as well. Still the creatures look like they were just people in costumes but they didn't look as rubbery coated. The dubbing was also done better for when the Zoanoids spoke in their monster form. Even one time composer, Les Claypool III, did a decent job on the unreleased music score. It wasn't complex but it did have a tune that got the blood pumping while watching the movie; which I enjoyed.
