About this deal

The One Where Rachel Tells Ross (SD, 23 minutes): Shortly after 9/11, a pre-recorded scene with a bomb joke left the producers with little choice but to alter the episode in which it appeared. For the first time, see the original producer's version of "The One Where Rachel Tells Ross" and read the original script. The One that Goes Behind the Scenes (SD, 42 minutes): The first real must-see special feature, this lengthy Discovery Channel documentary is easily the best extra available on the first ten discs and, after so many shallow clip montages, a genuine relief from the monotony. Candid and extensive, a variety of interviews with the cast and crew are intercut with fly-on-the-wall prep and production footage. But it's when the cameras go inside the writer's room, into the cast rehearsals and onto the stage in front of a live studio audience that the documentary really takes off. It's all a bit dated, I'll admit, and it focuses on Season Six episodes rather than much from Season Five. That doesn't mean it isn't enjoyable, though. Don't skip past this one assuming it's as trite as some of the supplemental drivel from the first four seasons. This set isn't perfect. I can't argue that it is a perfect set because it's got a lot of issues that undoubtedly will annoy some buyers. What I will say is that I have never thought that this incredible series would ever arrive on Blu-ray in High Definition and that it would look as amazing as it does on this Blu-ray release. Things get a bit more confusing at this point. The supersized episodes broadcast during season 7 are not presented on this set in High Definition and are instead included in Standard Definition within the bonus features. Audio Commentaries – Commentaries for "The One with the Holiday Armadillo", "The One with Joey's New Brain", and "The One with Monica and Chandler's Wedding" parts one and two with Bright, Kaufman, and Crane. Costume designer Debra McGuire also comments on "The One with the Holiday Armadillo", and she's a welcome and smart addition, as that particular episode has some very memorable costumes.

What's Up With Your Friends? are brief montages of the characters and each section features clips highlighting the various seasons. Behind the Style: The Look of 'Friends' (SD, 20 min) – Costume designer Debra McGuire, hair stylist Jonathan Hanousek, and makeup artist Robin Siegel. McGuire has the most to say, discussing how the clothing choices embodied the personality of each character. The others aren't bad, but there's not as much to talk about with hair and makeup. Joey Joey" Music Video (SD, 3 min) – Even weirder than the last music video, this one is cut together by what appears to have been an eight grader using iMovie. Friends Around the World (SD, 8 minutes): The world loves Friends apparently. See international audiences react, go inside foreign studios to see episodes dubbed in different languages, and learn about challenges associated with episode translations.

Of course, 'Friends' wasn't perfect. For every enjoyable celebrity cameo, there are a lot of needless ones, such as an entirely gratuitous and unfunny cold open featuring Robin Williams and Billy Crystal. 'Friends' also had a terrible propensity for stealth clip shows. Most TV series have one, maybe two clip episodes, and the show is either all clips or has a short introduction by one of the actors. 'Friends' tried to integrate their clip shows with actual plot, meaning that you can't entirely skip those episodes, but big chunks of them will be material you've already seen. And there are four or five scattered throughout the show. In retrospect, season one feels uneven, and season nine takes a huge dip in quality, starting with the poorly plotted "The One Where No One Proposes", and then starting a major plot where Chandler has to move to Tulsa for work. Season nine is also where you'll find the aforementioned "The One with the Male Nanny", which shows just how poorly Chandler's character was being handled by that point. Friends' on Location in London (SD, 2 min) – The finale of season four takes place in London, and this featurette briefly looks at the logistics of that decision. Fans might get upset over the shortcomings of this set. I can understand that. It does have some shortcomings, and because this show is an absolute favorite for so many fans (myself included) to say that the complete series release on Blu-ray (which has been a highly anticipated set) has some flaws and is not an entirely flawless release is going to be annoying for many of you out there. It's understandable.

Friends: The Complete Series [Blu-ray] [2002] [1994] [Region

Friends’ continuing popularity is impressive, and the mere existence of this Blu-ray set is a testament to that. Warner Bros. would not be spending the time or money to take the original 35 mm negatives to make new HD transfers for both this set and syndication purposes if the show wasn’t bringing in the revenue to justify it – which is no doubt why we’re getting this Blu-ray set before, say, a Smallville one, among many other series that have strong followings but not Friends-size followings. Behind the Style: The Look of Friends is a twenty-minute long documentary about the costume designer, makeup artist, and hair stylist who bring top quality work on to the show and how it contributes to the success of Friends. Friends' Around the World (SD, 8 min) – While 'Friends' was made in America, it wasn't just for Americans. This featurette shows the kind of work that went into localizing an episode of 'Friends' for another country.

Bright also explained that he previously remastered 12 of the episodes of Friends for a special movie theater release celebrating the sitcom's 25th anniversary in 2019 "and got to see the original negatives and do color correction on them." He added, "It's night and day, even from HD. That's what I'd like to get over the fence next." Friends arrives on Blu-ray with 1080p widescreen transfers remastered from the 35mm film elements. This is the first time Friends has ever been released on home media in widescreen. Friends was only released on DVD in the original broadcast aspect ratio of 1.33:1 full frame. Audio Commentaries – Commentaries for "The One Where No One's Ready", "The One With The Football", and "The One the Morning After" with Bright, Kaufman, and Crane. Art director John Shaffner also participates on "The One With The Football". These commentaries set up the template for the commentaries throughout the rest of the set, with each participant recorded separately. Crane mainly talks about writing, characters, and arc, Bright mainly talks about the logistics of shooting, and Kaufman usually tells anecdotes or just laughs at the jokes. In this set, we learn that the football park was built in a studio, and that Lisa Kudrow actually flashed people during that episode. Friends: The Complete Series includes an exclusive bonus disc that is only included in this Blu-ray edition of the series. The main inclusion, the " True Friends Documentaries" are presented with 1080p High Definition transfers. Friends on Location in London (SD, 2 minutes): A much too short look at the show's hop across the pond.

Like most shows that went on for ten years, Friends didn’t end on its strongest note. The last couple of seasons were weaker than much of what came before it, with some questionable storylines – Joey and Rachel!? – and an overall feeling of been there, done that. But most of Friends holds up very well, with plenty of classic storylines and episodes – my personal favorite era being the end of Season 4/beginning of Season 5, as the “Chandler and Monica keep their relationship a secret” storyline played out. I hope there are other diehard fans out there who notice this stuff!! I'm not sure if there's already been posts about it 🤷🏻‍♀️ Moving past the aspect-ratio issue (which may either thrill or annoy you), the actual PQ is dramatically improved over the quality on the previous DVD sets. The earlier seasons in particular were significantly upgraded by getting the boost to High Definition.

Audio Commentaries: The long-running series' tenth and final season walks away with three farewell commentaries: "The One With the Late Thanksgiving" with executive producers Kevin S. Bright, Marta Kauffman and David Crane, "The One Where the Stripper Cries" with Bright, Kauffman and Crane, and "The Last One" with Bright, Kauffman and Crane. Friends Visit The Ellen DeGeneres Show (16 min.) is a sit-down with Ellen for some of the Friends actors. The interviews were recorded separately but this should still be an exciting supplement for fans of Friends and Ellen (who had her own awesome sitcom, of course). It's doubtful that this series will ever fade away into pop-culture obscurity. Friends was brilliant television when it originally aired and it holds up today as one of the most easily re-watchable and entertaining series around. Some might want to refer to it as a "warm blanket". I certainly don't mind calling it that sometimes.
