About this deal

In London, crews fought blazes that destroyed more than 40 properties. On Tuesday, more than a dozen fires broke out across the capital. Sever al wildfires also broke out on July 7 in the Leiria and Santarem districts, in the Ourem municipality. Note: Satellites find fires by sensing temperatures on the ground and then looking for areas with the same temperature as a fire. False detections can occur in places with high ground temperatures or sun reflection. Satellites also routinely find multiple hotspots for a single large fire. Your mouth is full of microscopic organisms, and so were the mouths of other members of the human family tree. Now, a team of researchers have harvested some of these microbes to better understand how our oral microbiome evolved. The team found the same ten types of bacterium in samples scraped from the teeth of modern humans, Neanderthals, monkeys and apes, pointing to the animals’ common origin. But Neanderthals and modern humans harboured bacteria that the others did not, including a group of Streptococcus bacteria which often help to digest starches. And genes that enable these Streptococcus bacteria to convert starches into energy-rich sugars were much more abundant in modern humans than in Neanderthals, hinting that reliance on starches grew during the course of human evolution. Chew over that research in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America.

Yeah, this is the so-called zombie fires. I couldn’t quite believe what I was reading. These are fires that stay alive, smouldering under the snow all winter and then pop up again. The first motor-driven fire-pump built by John Morris and Sons was for the Bury Town Council. It was built in 1909 after Morris and Sons had already turned out from its works a large number of motor-driven first-aid engines, tenders, and fire-escapes. [8] So, the very first thing he taught me was about these fires, and I was a bit doubtful to be honest. I didn’t really believe that this was actually happening, but, yeah, then I got into the research and we also talked to a lot of fire managers about it and they all said, ‘Yes, this is really happening,’ and yeah, that was really exciting I guess. Here is a guide to the icons on map. Need more tips for getting started? Visit our User Guide available here Kolesov is seeing first hand what scientists have been warning about for years. Wildfires are becoming larger and more intense and they are also happening in places that aren’t used to them.

And so, Voyager 1 is outside the Solar System. I’m trying to get a picture in my head of where is the edge of the Solar System.

Wildfires are spreading across Europe as the combination of heatwaves and droughts are making it hard to combat the blazes in some regions. France: Since July 12, firefighters in the southwest Gironde department have been battling to tame a fire which has so far ravaged nearly 20,600 hectares (50,903 acres) of land. Nearly 37,000 people have been evacuated from their homes. In your opinion then, are these overwintering fires just like very interesting but very rare anomalies, or are they common enough to cause a serious problem? Managing director John Morris junior invented a compound in a froth-forming liquid charged with carbonic acid gas which when sprayed on a fire prevents combustion by excluding oxygen. Unusually Sensitive people: Keep outdoor activities light and short; go indoors if you have symptoms. It’s time now for the Briefing chat, where we discuss a couple of stories highlighted in the Nature Briefing. So, Ben, what have you got this week? The data on the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map are intended to help individuals make decisions to protect their health during fires. Their Ajax petrol-propelled motor pump was fitted with a 70 b.h.p. engine which drove a special form of turbine pump which, it was claimed by the makers, had advantages over similar existing apparatus of other makes as well as over various types of reciprocating pump which were also being offered. The pump was extremely compact, leaving room for considerable first-aid plant including a 50-ft. sliding-carriage escape, a 30-gallon chemical tank complete with reel and hose, and stowage capacity for 2,000 ft. of hose and all the other standard equipment suitable for such a turnout. The capacity of the standard pump offered by this maker was rated at 350 gallons per minute although an alternative 450-gallon pattern was also available. [9] Home market

In Europe, more than nine out of 10 fires are ignited by human activities, such as arson, disposable barbeques, electricity lines, or littered glass, according to EU data. John Morris and Sons' first motor driven "first-aid motor fire engine" was built in 1905 for CapeTown's Metropolitan Fire Service. [6] It was fitted with a 30–40 h.p. Belsize engine and provided accommodation for six firemen. [7] Smoke plumes shown on the Map indicate that smoke is present. However, the smoke may be high in the air instead of at ground level. Last year, more than half a million hectares (1.2 million acres) burned in the European Union, making it the bloc’s second-worst forest fire season on record after 2017. What has been happening?

Portugal: A wildfire started on July 17 in the Murca municipality, in northern Portugal and spread towards Vila Pouca de Aguiar and Carrazedo de Montenegro. Well, I just love the idea that these sort of scientists of Voyager 1 are just sort of listening to space humming. That’s lovely, much nicer than my story this week, which is a little bit more on the gruesome side. So, I have been reading an article in The Guardian about a treasure trove of Neanderthal bones in a cave in Italy.
