Social media is often blamed for young people’s mental health problems, especially self-esteem and anxiety …

Dr Julie Smith: ‘Mental health is no different to physical Dr Julie Smith: ‘Mental health is no different to physical

So therapy is often about accepting thoughts as they arrive and then making choices about what you do with them. If I spend time with these thoughts, is that going to help me move forward where I want to go? Or if I spend time with these, what impact is that having that’s different? It’s allowing your brain to come up with whatever it comes up with and then choosing what to do next. I don’t have a TikTok account and although this may be a weird way to start a review, I am saying it because apparently the author is a TikTok star with many followers. I stumbled upon this when I was browsing through Edelweiss for ARCs and the title caught my attention so I saved it as future reads and got it when it was published. This was my February’s Non-Fiction book of the month. Through it's practical structure, it allows the reader to dip in and out, with bitesize chapters focusing on a specific topic or issue.

There’s a chapter in your book titled “How do you make yourself do something when you don’t feel like it?”. We’ve all been there. What’s the answer? That’s partly why the book felt such a timely thing to do. I can’t give everybody one-to-one therapy, but I can do something. I can share some basic education as widely as I can. A portion of my videos have been about trying to remind people that what they see on social media isn’t always real. To be mindful when they’re spending time with certain content of how it makes them feel and to use social media to enhance their life rather than take away from it. Mindfulness - achieving a state of mind that prays attention to the present moment (a gym workout for the mind). Thoughts are not facts. They are guesses, stories, memories, ideas, and theories. They are … one potential explanation for the sensations you are experiencing … So what does this mean for those anxious thoughts that pop into our heads? It means the power of that thought … is in how much we buy into it. How much we believe that thought to be a true reflection of reality. The best way to break down the power that thoughts have over our emotional state is to first get some distance from them. How do we get distance from something that is inside our head?

Gas. You can start from this one. If we associate failure with unworthiness, then starting anything new is going to feel overwhelming and procrastination will be front and centre. We protect ourselves from the psychological threat of shame by sabotaging the process before it gets started.” There’s a line that often circulates that gen Z and millennials are more prone to mental health problems, that they’re snowflakes basically. What would you say about that? Dr. Smith's writing style is empathetic and compassionate, creating a safe space for readers to explore their emotions and vulnerabilities. The book not only provides practical tools but also promotes a deeper understanding of how our minds work. This knowledge enables readers to fortify their mental health proactively, making it an essential companion in the journey towards self-care.

All in all, dari beberapa buku psikologi yang udah gue baca, WHNTMTB ini terasa yg paling komplet dan cocok jadi bekal awal untuk mulai belajar mengontrol respon, atensi, dan mood kita. There’s a mix in there. I’ve tried to keep it to everyday tools. I’ve been very careful about that distinction: “This is the educational element of therapy, it’s not therapy.” These are tools that you can put into use today and tomorrow, but the book’s not a therapist. You have a choice how long you spend online, you have a choice about who you follow and who you don’t Emotional Vocabulary - labelling our emotions (both positive and negative) for greater understanding and thus better regulation.
