About this deal

Only caveat here is if you require hardware transcoding then the DS723+ might not be the best solution for you. We tested out the unit with Plex 4K Direct play The New CPU architecture allows great PCIe3 bandwidth to be afforded to the rest of the hardware, inside and out If you need to transcode 4K media, the DS720+ may be the better NAS. There’s more to it than that so let’s take a deeper look at the two Synology NAS. Synology DiskStation DS723+ is the newer NAS Bellevue, WA: Jan. 11, 2023—Synology today announced the new 2-bay Synology DiskStation DS723+, the smallest expandable option in its lineup of all-in-one solutions for home offices and small businesses.

It would have been nice if the DS723+ NAS had arrived with 10GbE on board (even if it meant increasing the price a bit, many would feel) or greater than gigabit on those default ethernet ports, but there is no avoiding that the DS723+ CLEARLY wins in terms of network connectivity, as it has the exact ports as the DS720+, but allows the scalability up to 10Gb/1,000MB/s bandwidth down the line. The Synology DS723+ vs DS720+ NAS – Software Performance The traditional data handling of the R1600 is very good, as seen in our DS1522+ testing earlier in 2022. As far as DSM (the Synology software) is concerned it will be able to run EVERYTHING! Additionally, the general file handling and throughput internally are going to be great too, so all good news. Then you have the advantage of the newer gen CPU in the DS723+ over the DS720+ supporting PCIe3 lanes, affording greater bandwidth to the rest of the hardware (i.e those M.2 slots being higher bandwidth and enabling that network upgrade slot), all the while with the CPU having the potential to hit 3.1Ghz of power when needed. It is genuinely a good CPU and there are lots of reasons why Synology have opted for this CPU, but it is by no means perfect and some specific user setups and their concerns do have merit. The one and only thing I don’t like about Synology multimedia apps or drive apps…. Is they TELL you where to put your media AND GENERALLY HAVE TWO-WAY SINK AS DEFAULT

Unlike previous models where one of the memory modules were soldered onto the mainboard, the DS723+ allows for all modules to be upgraded. The unit can be upgraded to a whopping 32GB of memory if you ever had the need to and allows for a great degree of expandability in terms of running applications on the NAS. It’s a more powerful processor that also draws more power from the PSU. This results in the 5W increase in power draw as stated by Synology. But because we’re talking about a more powerful and modern CPU, Synology has been able to add in a PCIe slot for 10Gb networking, as well as the two M.2 SSD slots. applies to files indexed or hosted by Synology Drive. For file access through other standard protocols, refer to the File Services section above) So, this is going to be quite a short section! For the most part, the Storage capabilities and options that the DS720+ and DS723+ arrive with are largely identical. Both of them feature two SATA Bays of storage (which can be fully/partially populated), both support the traditional RAID configurations (RAID 0/1) as well as Synology Hybrid RAID, both support BTRFS and EXT4 file systems, both have m.2 NVMe SSD slots than can be used for 2280 SSDs for caching and both can be expanded by an additional 5-Bays of storage with the DX517. There is very, very little difference between the DS723+ and DS720+ in terms of storage. However… How do the Synology DS720+ and DS723+ NAS Compare in their Storage Options? NAS Model Most users are going to have a plexa library that they’ve probably customized and should customize in one bulk “media folder” and then break it down within…. If you do stuff like that for all your multimedia they’re native apps don’t work you have to have it where they want it…. Same with sync you have to have it where they want it and it’s only sync … Me personally I want one-way sink data goes on the NAS … You can delete it off the phone or computer and that won’t transfer over…. They have improved the drive application but I still have to improve video photo and the other ones to be one way and for us to control the locations multiple or single nested location I don’t want to be told or you got to have it in the ” home /user /names/ photo/ to have the photo application work Synology has switched to AMD hardware in lieu of Intel, and I'm all for it. The Ryzen R1600 that powers the DS723+ is a dual-core model with four threads, with a base frequency of 2.60GHz and 3.10GHz boost. The best part about the switch is that there's significantly more power here than the Celeron J4125-powered DS720+ and DS920+, making the DS723+ a true powerhouse. I was originally sad, but having seen this review, and several others, I’m so glad I didn’t go down this rout. Bad Synology! Hope they learn the lesson for the next gen. The box fulfills two principle requirements: Fast, reliable storage for my photographic work, and media services. Of course the DS1522+ would likely have been the go-to box if storage was my only concern, but for now I’m very happy with the DS920+ box that provides me with storage and media provision very well indeed.Aside from the processor and supported RAM, the two NAS are almost identical. Looking at the DiskStation DS723+ and DS720+ and it’s clear to see good reasons to choose one over the other. If you’re wanting the latest and greatest, the DS723+ is for you.
