Butler followed Clay's Ark with the critically acclaimed short story "Bloodchild" (1984). Set on an alien planet, it depicts the complex relationship between human refugees and the insect-like aliens who keep them in a preserve to protect them, but also to use them as hosts for breeding their young. The Oankali are a fascinating alien creation. Covered in tentacles like a large sea slug, the appearance of the Oankali is so off-putting to humans that Lilith must spend much time overcoming her visceral reaction of fear and disgust at them. The three gender system of male, female and ooloi allows Butler to subvert ideas around binary gender and the nuclear family in profound and fascinating ways. And the Oankali exist in a much less destructive way than humans do – they have an intimate relationship with the world around them, absorbing and learning from other life forms, and they have sex by linking directly into each other’s neural networks. As such their behaviour is driven more by empathy and sympathy than what the Oankali call the Human contradiction – our intelligence subservient to our hierarchical instincts. In "Family," Nikanj changes Lilith's genetics so that she can understand the Oankali language. Before the beginning of "Nursery," it also makes Lilith physically stronger and gives her the ability to open Oankali walls and control the suspended-animation plants. These transformations change not only her physical body but also her personality and behavior. As Nancy Jesser explains in her article "Blood, genes and gender in Octavia Butler's Kindred and Dawn," Lilith's physical and social transformation suggests a link between the body's makeup (genotype) and lived experience (phenotype): "Because the Oankali are expert readers of the human genome as well as its manipulators, Butler uses them to explore the mechanisms and limits of the effects of genotype manipulations and the experiences of lived bodies." In 1983, Butler published "Speech Sounds", a story set in a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles where a pandemic has caused most humans to lose their ability to read, speak, or write. For many, this impairment is accompanied by uncontrollable feelings of jealousy, resentment, and rage. "Speech Sounds" received the 1984 Hugo Award for Best Short Story. [23]

Lilith sits for a while, caught up in her despair. Eventually, Nikanj tries to get Lilith to move, but she wants to give Joseph a proper burial. Nikanj offers to have Joseph's body transported to Earth so that he can be buried there, and Lilith agrees. Nikanj touches Lilith, and at first Lilith pulls away. It tells her that it wants to feel what Lilith feels. Lilith says that she wants the same, but Nikanj says that its feelings are too complex for her to understand. She asks it to try to make her understand. Nikanj places a sensory arm on her and gives her a "new color"—a completely new experience unlike anything she's felt before, a "sensuous promise" (225). Suddenly, Nikanj cuts the feeling off, leaving nothing but deadness behind. It tells her that that's how it feels. She understands and gives it a hug. The ooloi and Lilith arrive at Curt's camp, where the humans were waiting angrily, with weapons in their hands. Curt told them that they were trespassing a "human place," looking pointedly at Lilith (227). Lilith feels intense hatred towards Curt, and Nikanj consoles her that he will not be returning to Earth. Meanwhile, Tate is talking to Kahguyaht and telling it to leave. Kahguyaht tells the group that if they use their machete on anyone, they will never see Earth. Instead, they will be placed with Toaht families and live the rest of their lives aboard the ship. Allison's ooloi is able to convince her to join the other side. In 2006, the Carl Brandon Society established the Octavia E. Butler Memorial Scholarship in Butler's memory, to enable writers of color to attend the annual Clarion West Writers Workshop and Clarion Writers' Workshop, descendants of the original Clarion Science Fiction Writers' Workshop in Clarion, Pennsylvania, where Butler got her start. The first scholarships were awarded in 2007. [93]The Oankali are stronger, more perceptive, and larger in population than the humans aboard their ship. All of these factors contribute to the fact that the Oankali have much more power than the humans in their "care." However, the largest force that augments Oankali power and decreases human power is something that appears harmless on the surface: knowledge. Eventually, the Oankali modify Lilith's memory so that she can more easily learn the Oankali language. They also modify her body chemistry so that she can open and close doors at will. They make these changes with Lilith's consent, though they tell her that if she does not consent they will surprise her with them. Lilith soon becomes the human with the most power aboard the Oankali ship. This power stems from the fact that she is the human with the most knowledge about their Oankali captors. This difference in power causes huge rifts between her and the humans that she is meant to train. Her knowledge makes her powerful and dangerous.
