If you’re already a telescope owner, this might be a good portable option for you, for the same reason as the ST80. I find the TravelScope 70 is lightweight enough that it plays much nicer on photo tripods than the ST80 that I own, and despite getting the ST80 specifically as a grab-n-go scope, I found that I would end up taking the TravelScope 70 outside instead, especially if I wanted a peek at something behind the trees, visible from a different part of my yard. It’s a bit like a ShortTube 70, in overall design and in application, and for an astro-tinkerer you may be able to fix some of its shortcomings. The Orion FunScope is another option for a bit lower of a price, but without the high-quality optics of the 100mm tabletop telescopes it’s a bit harder for us to recommend. The Celestron ExploraScope 22103 114AZ Reflector Telescope is priced like a beginner’s telescope, but it has some shortcomings that make it a poor choice except for those who really want to learn. On the plus side, it has a stable mount and tripod, so you won’t have to worry as much about that part interfering with your operation. There’s a 114-millimeter aperture, which is fairly large for the price. The included 2x Barlow lens is a nice touch, increasing what you can do with this telescope and its eyepieces without driving the price up too much.

I was not able to see any details in the Andromeda Galaxy M31–the satellite galaxy M32 was only suspected, and there was no hint of the fainter M110. All I could see was a ghostly pale core of the galaxy, and this was the one object that was especially disappointing in comparison with what other small scopes of mine had shown. The Celestron CPC 1100 StarBright XLT 2800mm Telescope is one of the best celestron telescopes on the market, due to its massive aperture, heavy-duty tripod, and GPS-connected alignment system. The Celestron NexStar 4 SE Telescope earns second place with its large aperture, automated mount, and easy setup, and its low price earns it the title of “best Celestron telescope for the money.” In third is the Celestron 21035 70mm Travel Scope, which is travel-ready and has a large lens and two eyepieces, plus a bargain price. That said, I’m about to pull the trigger on a MAK-Cass 127mm from Orion and having read this review, I have pretty high expectations of the clarity deep space bright object discovery moving forward. Hope that is true.

The Celestron 114LCM Computerized Telescope is a good telescope but has some peripheral issues that cost it a few positions on our list. Despite its many strengths, it does have a few weak points that may be important to consider before purchasing. The two real letdowns among the accessories are the finderscope and the prism diagonal. The finderscope is ridiculous. Galileo’s telescope was probably better. These things barely belong in a McDonald’s happy meal toy, let alone a telescope. It is barely sufficient for sighting through it to find targets, but it isn’t usable on its own as a wide-field finderscope.
