About this deal

So when Laurie wakes up covered in blood, how will she ever be able to explain herself and the aftermath of what has happened? Who will ever believe her and her so called best friend is on hand to fill in the blanks. The perfect mash up of a police procedural and a psychological thriller! I had no idea that this was the second book in the DI Daniel Riley series until I got to the end, can absolutely be read as a standalone.... this book wasn’t necessarily full of crazy twists and turns, but I loved how it dove so deeply into the psychology of these characters.... A dark domestic drama with some pretty psychotic characters....

Cedar Close: An absolutely gripping The Couple on Cedar Close: An absolutely gripping

This is done to preserve the anonymity of the people in that area, as some postcodes cover a very small area, sometimes a single building. There is much more but I am not going to do a whole plot summary. Here is the thing. I do not really read many detective stories. It is not one of my preferred genres. So I was going to DNF this. Other than the disappointment of figuring out the plot early on, the storyline was interesting enough that I stayed with it throughout. Although figuring out the murderer was easy, I still wanted to know how the story would end, and the conclusion was satisfying. Internally the home presents well with a neutral decor and under-floor heating throughout (excluding sunroom). An entrance hallway has a useful cloaks-cupboard and, door leading into the principal bedroom which has a large bay window facing towards the front aspect of the home. There is also access via a door into the living room which also has front aspect views and wet room. This area of the home has been fitted with an open, walk-in area with rain-shower and separate attachment, an affixed clear screen, low level w/c and a vanity unit with top mounted wash hand basin which are finished in white. Furthermore, there is a heated towel rail, both the walls and flooring are covered with a modern ceramic tile and an obscure glazed window faces the side aspect.

Cedar Close is an exclusive development of just seven contemporary three and four bedroom homes in a private cul-de-sac in the desirable village of Linton, around ten miles from the centre of Cambridge.

Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and Anna-Lou Weatherly for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review. The plot was embarrassingly juvenile and paper-thin. I knew who the killer was and why they did it within the first few chapters, and spent the rest of the book waiting for the idiot characters to catch up. Detective Dan Riley and his team seem to have it all worked out. Dan though isn’t entirely convinced. I am a true believer of going with your gut instinct as it’s never proven me wrong so far and Dan can’t get rid of that niggling feeling. Even though the pressure is on from above to make a conviction. I am sure what Laurie goes through in this book is everyone’s worst nightmare. To be accused of something you know you haven’t done. Couldn’t think of anything worse. I'd like to thank Bookouture, Anna-Lou Weatherley and NetGalley for approving this book in exchange for an honest review.

Within the police there seemed to be two trains of thought, one following circumstantial evidence, and the other following a gut feeling of Dan Riley. Was interesting to see the conflict within the team as most people seemed to think Dan was wrong. Many addicts swap one addiction for another, Laurie. And some people develop another addiction while trying to anesthetize themselves from the first." If you read the conversations out loud without all the irrelevant fluff in between, they'd go something like this:For Monica's plan to work, she had to rely on Laurie getting blind drunk and passing out after reentering her house and not finding Robert's body in the meantime. If Laurie had called Robert's phone just once before she started drinking, she'd have heard it from downstairs like she did after the power cut, and followed it to the guest bathroom, and been able to tell the police while stone cold sober that she didn't do it. Monica would have had no alibi and wouldn't have been able to plant the blood on Laurie, and her plan would have failed. But Laurie decided not to phone Robert when he was over an hour late to their meeting, and decided to wait until the middle of the night instead, because reasons.
