Nov 10, 1928: Remarque publishes All Quiet on the Western Front". History.com . Retrieved June 3, 2013. It showed me ways to achieve the goal of being calm and it was interesting to see that the book broke up different topics seen in someone's life where you might need calm or areas that can give you calm. The topics in this book included are, Just 19 years old, Franz Kemmerich had enlisted with his best friend and classmate, Bäumer. Kemmerich is shot in the leg early in the story; his injured leg has to be amputated, and he dies shortly after. In anticipation of Kemmerich's imminent death, Müller was eager to get his boots. While in the hospital, someone steals Kemmerich's watch that he intended to give to his mother, causing him great distress and prompting him to ask about his watch every time his friends visit him in the hospital. Paul later finds the watch and hands it over to Kemmerich's mother, and lies to her that Franz died instantly and painlessly. Bloom, Harold (2009). Kantorek is a hypocrite, urging the young men he teaches to fight in the name of patriotism, while not voluntarily enlisting himself. In a twist of fate, Kantorek is later drafted. He reluctantly joins the ranks of his former students, where he is drilled and taunted by Mittelstädt, one of the students he had earlier persuaded to enlist. But it doesn’t have to be a lonely pursuit. Ellie Romer-Lee, head of talent at a London-based tech start-up, made hundreds of origami cranes as decorations for her wedding last year. Folding the cranes, she says, “was about making some time in the run up to my wedding to spend time with people I cared about. Not only does Thielen recommend meditating once a day, but she also says that on some days, you may feel the need to do it more than once. “Meditation doesn’t require any equipment or a special place,” she explains. “If you’re having a stressful day at work, get outside if weather permits, walk around while breathing deeply. Or you can sneak away into the bathroom stall at work. You can do it anywhere at any time, completely free of charge.” Similarly, Dalzell suggests engaging in some meditative process daily, but clarifies that “this could mean sitting in meditation, chanting, [or] listening to quiet music.” While fighting at the front, Bäumer and his comrades engage in frequent battles and endure the treacherous and filthy conditions of trench warfare. The battles fought here have no names and seem to have little overall significance, except for the impending possibility of injury or death. Only meager pieces of land are gained, which are often lost again later. Remarque often refers to the living soldiers as old and dead, emotionally drained and shaken. "We are not youth any longer. We don't want to take the world by storm. We are fleeing from ourselves, from our life. We were eighteen and had begun to love life and the world; and we had to shoot it to pieces".

Keep a gratitude journal. Many people keep a gratitude journal to catalog what they are grateful for. Personalize your gratitude journal by drawing the faces of those you love, places that bring you peace, or other things that you are grateful for. The process of sketching can be a great stress reliever, and revisiting your creations can also bring you some peace in the future.

Calm: Calm the Mind. Change the World - Goodreads

The English translation by Arthur Wesley Wheen gives the title as All Quiet on the Western Front. The literal translation of " Im Westen nichts Neues" is "Nothing New in the West," with "West" being the Western Front; the phrase refers to the content of an official communiqué at the end of the novel. This book is nothing phenomenal if I start making you feel like it's the best book ever to motivate everyone. No, it's nothing like that. But yes, the book does what it meant to do. It helps me keep calm. When people around me are just living their own lives being themselves who they are, telling me things which I really do not need to know or hear this book is the one thing which help me see things in a positive way. Also interesting to me were some of the classes like the “Headache and Migraine Release” series. As a lifelong migraineur (one of the reasons I started meditating in the first place), I thought the fact that this app was offering meditation for pain management was fantastic. And there were other series for things like training your mind or grieving that seemed worthwhile.

These criticisms suggest that experiences of the war and the personal reactions of individual soldiers to their experiences may be more diverse than Remarque portrays them; however, it is beyond question that Remarque gives voice to a side of the war and its experience that was overlooked or suppressed at the time. This perspective is crucial to understanding the true effects of World War I. The evidence can be seen in the lingering depression that Remarque and many of his friends and acquaintances were suffering a decade later. [9] Brian Murdoch's 1993 translation rendered the phrase as "there was nothing new to report on the Western Front" within the narrative. However, in the foreword, he explains his retention of the original book title:
