Landis, Thomas D.; Dumroese, R. Kasten (2015). "Propagating Native Milkweeds for Restoring Monarch Butterfly Habitat" (PDF). International Plant Propagators' Society, Combined Proceedings (2014). 64: 302. Archived (PDF) from the original on March 8, 2021 . Retrieved July 11, 2021– via United States Department of Agriculture: United States Forest Service. Many sources of milkweed seeds require stratification (cold, moist treatment) before sowing. In a review of stratification requirements for common milkweed, recommendations varied from as short as 7 days to as long as 11 months at 5°C (41°F) (Luna and Dumroese, 2013). Butterfly milkweed (A. tuberosa) germination increased from 29 to 48 to 62% as stratification duration increased from 0 to 30 to 60 days, respectively (Bir, 1986). Our informal natural stratification trial with showy (milkweed) and narrow leaf milkweed (A. fascicularis) in southern Oregon revealed that seeds began to germinate after 15 weeks in stratification (Fig. 3A). Asclepias syriaca". Butterfly gardening & all things milkweed. Archived from the original on July 7, 2015 . Retrieved July 7, 2015. germination: seed requires cold moist period. I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching and gorgeous cover and its intriguing synopsis and title. The synopsis stated that 'Fans of Jojo Moyes, Harriet Evans and Lucinda Riley will be gripped'. I am a huge fan of JoJo Moyes so am looking forward to seeing if this lives up to this statement. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

Overall an absolutely stunning unputdownable unique story that will whisk you to the beautiful Cornwall and stunning Costa Rica.

Depending on the zone, some butterfly attracting plants include: purple cone flower ( Echinacea purpurea), buttonbush ( Cephalanthus occidentalis), yellow cone flowers, sunflowers, marigolds, poppies, cosmos, salvias, some lilies, asters, coreopsis, daisies, Joe Pye Weed ( Eutrochium), verbenas, Blue Mist Shrub ( Caryopteris × clandonensis), lantanas, liastris, milkweed (especially for the monarch butterfly, whose caterpillars feed solely on this plant), zinnias, pentas, porterweeds, and others. [16] Avoid cultivars of plants that have "double flowers" as their reproductive parts have been converted into extra petals and therefore do not produce floral rewards for butterflies and other pollinators. [17] Care should also be taken to research a species to assure that it is not invasive in a given region. Although the plot focuses mainly on Erin, home with her tail between her legs after her relationship with her married lover failed, and Maggie, the elderly recluse with terminal cancer who employs Erin to help finish the book she is writing, it also encompasses Erin's parents, who are hiding a secret of their own, and Maggie's son Lucas, who has exiled himself in Costa Rica, guarding his own secret. An old friend of Maggie's, Fred, also appears and is a stabilizing influence. Hutchison does an excellent job at breaking up the story so that the reader is aware of who is narrating throughout the story. When Inara is recounting what has happened at the Garden, the story is told from her voice. At times throughout The Butterfly Garden, the language used for Inara/Maya’s character almost seems unlikely for an eighteen year old. The reader learns about her troubled past and how she has been on her own, fending for herself for as long as she can remember. Hutchison has created a slew of characters for The Butterfly Garden each with their own unique personality and identity and even though a lot of them are secondary characters, Hutchison has done an excellent job at not confusing the reader and constantly has the narrator throw in little things to help the reader remember who a character may be. Maggie has lived alone for many years and she harbours secrets that she’s never shared with anyone. Her son lives on the other side of the world in Costa Rica and there are things she really wants to say to him before her time is up. Can Erin help Maggie find the forgiveness she seeks before it’s too late?

Krischik, Vera A.; Minnesota Extension Service (1996). Butterfly Gardening. St. Paul, Minnesota: University of Minnesota: Minnesota Extension Service, University of Minnesota. ISBN 9781888440041. OCLC 762548490 . Retrieved August 3, 2021– via Google Books. The storyline itself is unique and just absolutely gorgeous. I loved that we got to visit not only Cornwall but also Costa Rica and Sophie has done both places jistoc. I was devastated by the end as it genuinely felt that I had come to the end of one of the most beautiful holidays I've ever had. I loved all the intriguing facts about butterflys and the fact that Sophie has done her research absolutely shines through!!! The storyline is filled with love, loss, friendship, beauty, sadness, happiness and of course butterflies!! It is a true rollercoaster of emotions!!! I was not expecting the twists at all and this is unlike any holiday fiction or romance I've ever read. This did not end like I expected and although I was devastated by a few things that did or didn't happen I LOVE the fact that this book was not predictable. It is so easy to fall into the web of predictability especially on a debut novel but a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Sophie who did not do this!!! I LOVED that I didn't guess the ending which is getting harder and harder the more books I read. The fact that what I hoped would happen didn't makes it more true to life in the fact that we don't always get what we wish for and sometimes the happy ending isn't what you expect.
