The main character starts out as a young teenager, horny and eager for adventure. He see horrible events and grows up to be a leader among men, etc. but the more he matures the less likeable he is. Some questions for the author: Hal has no problem marrying a Muslim Balinese woman--indeed, he doesn't even seem to realize that she is not Christian.
